I thought it would be fun to see what newer lines of mic's everyone's using lately. My personal favorites are the ADK's. I've been a very pleased user for about the past 8 years or so. I've continued to add more of their models to my mic closet...so that's my testimony. And you?

i just picked up a pair of akg c480s for acoustic instruments, and wow - these mics are almost smoother than my pair of schoeps cmc64s, and far better than my skm184s. i have no idea why these are not discussed more often. they are just fantastic, and i wish i had discovered them sooner. the rode ntk is still about the best overall vocal mic i have used (compared to tlm103, at4050, sp c1, at4033).

I picked up a pair of Josephson C42mp's about a month ago and I couldn't be happier. I use them - OH's, acoustic guitar, perc, piano, and they've been better than perfect.

Right now, I'd say Brauner and Soundelux are making THE mics. I'm really a huge fan of David Bock's work (Soundelux). I'm really looking forward to hearing the new E49 and U99 Mk II, and I'm still interested in hearing the Studio Projects / Stephen Paul mic whenever they get it ready.
Oh, and I'd like to give the Josephson SD condensers a listen too.

The new "Telefunken" u47 clone is fabulous.
There is also another, similar offering from Gunter Wagner that should be killer, though I haven't yet heard it.
SPA is having delays getting a few parts made to their exacting standards. When that mic finally makes it to market, it should be superb, as they are aproaching it from a no-compromise standpoint.

I'm a happy owner of the new "Convertible" mic made by Tracy Korby. The 67M and 251 Capsules sound great.

I tried several at the AES show (not the ideal environment, but at least you have all the mics at hand) and I was especially impressed by the ADKs and the Brauner KHE. One costs about 30 times more than the other, so we are talking about very different beasts. Also, the fact that the ADKs use chinese capsules makes me worry about a recall or something.....
As for what I use, the U87 Klaussified is hard to beat. Maybe with the Brauner KHE, but it's twice as expensive, though.

Well, on the advice of a local bluegrass musician, engineer and recording dude, I picked up a couple of Octava MK 012 small condensers at the Guitar Center sale (2 for $99). I'm using them on acoustic guitar, drum overheads and sax to see how they work and so far I'm impressed...especially for the bucks.
They are so small I'm thinking of figuring out some way to mount one on the bell of my horn and try it live.

Sennheiser e609 silver series. they are amazingly great replcants of the oriignal 409's, and are cheap at $99 retail.
A killer amp mic ofr electric guitar, and an equally great tom mic.

I have two recommendations for live work; Neumann KM185 ( this is the hypercardioid version of the KM184 ). The 185 has all the sparkle of the 184, but the narrow pattern means you can really crank the gain without getting feedback. The other mic I really like lately is the Audix SCX-25, the one that looks like a lollipop. Great flat, airy sound on all sorts of sources. It's particularly good on bluegrass vocals, where you have two or more singers singing into a single mic. It's the new standard for this application.

I haven't seen anybody use an Audix in the bluegrass world yet. Most musicians on TV shows like the Grand Ole Opry, Public Television concerts, CMT, etc. are using the AT 4050 mics with good results (if they use a single mic, that is).
Do you have any names of artists using a single Audix mic? I have been on a private crusade to get most of the bluegrass bands out of the AT 4033 mind set which is what most of the bands have been using..why I don't know.
I write a "sound advice" column for the Oregon Bluegrass Association newsletter and if the Audix is the "new standard" mic, I'm sure someone will ask me about it. thanks..

I got the idea of using the Audix from Paul Knight, who is a well known soundman in the Northern California Area. Paul runs sound for several festivals down here, including the Wolf Mountain festival, the Good-Old fashioned festival in Hollister, and the upcoming CBA festival in Woodland. Paul has been using the scx-25 exclusively the past two seasons wherever the "single vocal" mic is called for. Some of the other specific artists now using it as well are Rounder recording artists Open Road, from Colorado, Jodie Stecher and the Perfect Strangers, ( Jodie carries his own scx-25 and specifies it in his contract ), and Highway One, a band from Santa Cruz. I've used the AT mic for this as well, but the Audix is a noticeable improvement, the high-end is clearer, and sounds from the side are much more natural sounding. By the way, I just ran sound for a show by Oregon based Jackstraw, during their Northern California tour. ( they use a conventional mic setup ); nice guys and real good players. Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, Jackstraw is made up of great players and fun guys. Speaking of California, I'm going to be running sound for a festival in Yreka next summer. We have some of our Oregon bands headed down there and since my better half is playng in her band I put in my bid for the sound and got it..
I have a different system for running sound when the act wants only one mic. Since I record a lot of the music I use a couple of small condensers on the same mic stand under the large condenser facing at 45 degrees left and right. The little Octava MK 012 mics work great. It gives me a stereo depth of field in the recording and so far the musicians seem to appreciate not having to lift into the large mic during their breaks.
I had a chat with Rhonda Vincent's engineer at Wintergrass in Tacoma, Washington last year. He said Neuman had approached her and wanted her to use their mics and be an endorser. She tried several and said no thanks... stuck with here 4033. Go figger....

Anyone tried the Shure KSM 109 yet, supposedly much in character to the 81, only cheaper?

This year I switched from my beloved 421's to Atm25's on toms and kicks, and the AT4047 replaced my 57 on guitar cabs. Two mics I thought I would never replace are now sitting on the shelf. Kudos to Audio Technica (I can't wait to try the dual element).

This has been said to death around these forums, but I'm still amazed at how great Soundelux's 251 sounds, and it's great on almost everything it's placed in front of.

E-Lambo is right. Maybe we should just put the entire Soundelux catalogue on the menu. Those guys are doing great stuff.
