The best turntable with the best arm and the best cartridge you can get/afford (and a good phone amp too).

A really good AD converter.

The application (Mac or PC) is less important if you donīt need denoising/ declicking …

Do you have Roxio's EZCD Creator (Toast in MAC world)? That, a decent sound card, and cables to tap the Record ouput of a reciever with a turntable will get you there. That and some time & patience. You will get a listenable CD with some analog noise from the record and needle.

Buy the remixes on CD. As bad as some of these things sound, they will sound infinitely better than your old albums copied to CD. Waste of time and effort.

I've worked (in the past) on preserving the data from vinyl and transcription one-offs, and this can get quite expensive to do properly, but at that point you are dealing with history, and you should talk to an expert. Parker Dinkins helped me out a lot at the time. But I imagine that you are talking about favorite stuff from your youth, and much of it does exist on CD, and can be found with an internet search. I have yet to want an artist or song that I could not find on CD. No doubt that they exist, but are likely rare in any form.

Well, I just spent the evening transferring seven Kim Fowley albums that are not likely to ever appear anywhere (if you know Kim's work you'll understand.)
Due to my strange taste in all things recorded I will most likely have to do this with many an album. I just thought I would be the exception here to Bill's remark (an honor to be sure). \:D

After copying about 10 LP's to cdr, I'd recommend just going out and buying the cd if possible. If not, go ahead but its real time consuming and a royal pain in the ass.

I have several clients that want old favorite albums transferred to CD. In some cases they don't want them "cleaned up", but rather just want a CD that sounds just like the record..lo fi, scratches and all.

In the case where they want the record cleaned up, I use the same process I use when I transfer reel to reel tapes or cassette to CD. Cool Edit has some good features like noise reduction, click and pop removal, clipped wave restore, etc. that does a decent job for little money.

Offering the service has been a nice money maker for me and keeps me busy between band gigs, recording gigs, live sound gigs and my real job..

lucky for you...
I was able to find "the Seeds", "Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross", "Tom Lehrer", "Nick Drake", and "Love"... just to name a few. These are commercial releases, and not hard to find.

A local company recently packaged a "Sonics" collection.

This stuff isn't really hard to find, and always sounds better than my old albums.

In terms of really rare stuff... like stuff that was rare to start with:

There is a store in Pittsburgh called Recordrama, and the fellow who owns it has what is supposed to be the largest collection of vinyl around. I haven't been there in years, but you used to be able to tape his ultra-rare stuff, I imagine by now you can buy the CD.

There is also a large collector of 78s here, and he has a studio wherein he dumps old rare 78s to digital.

So I don't say that you can find every atist on CD, but I will say that with a little investigation, you might be surprised at what is actually available.

In the real world, most people want to transfer their 1967 copy of "The Doors" rather than buy a CD. There is no value in that.

I'm agreeing with everyone here ! Do, don't do it, buy CD, leave in pops, denoise. Yep I do all that too...

One thing I've just noticed - when I bought the recently remastered Doors 'Legacy' Break on Thru has some new words in it ! Yep - remix ! At least it doesn't seem squished.

So I'm still thinking about altering history - but as anyone who has played live knows - every performance can change history itself ! Maybe it's the capturing of a single performance that follows an artist thru time that should be challanged.

Anyway - My bootleg 'Enjoy Hendrix' Live at the LA Forum will definetly not be on a commercial CD. It's stuff like that I'll mostly transcribe and re-balance. \:\)

But it is likely available on CD at record fairs, unless you redcorded it yourself. I don't go to these things, but I passed through one in a hotel once, and the number of available boots on CD was impressive. Beatles, Zep, Hendrix, Pink Floyd, etc.

But very little if anything of the Kim Fowley catalog. And don't get me started about comedy/spoken word. Can I say that on a audio forum?

Perhaps. I don't kmnow how extensive his catalog is. But I came across the following seven titiles from the top hit on a google search of "Kim Fowley" +CD

Animal God of the street
Day the earth stood still
The Fantasy world
Let the madness in
Living in the streets
Outrageous/Good clean fun
Sex Cars and God

As I said before, not everybody is represented, or completely represented. But there's a lot out there.

Ha ha - hey Bill and HiRoller - You guys know where to find all the cool stuff we thought would never make it to CD !

Well if it made it to CD thru some decent converters then maybe I can get rid of most of my huge vinyl collection - although I am kind of using it as a bass trap in the listening room ! Ha Ha Wonder what the absorption co-efficient of CD are compared to LPs ! \:D

Indeed it was. Probably the best overall night of music I remember there!
