Hi!
General recording question here. Generally, are phantom switches turned on before or after connecting the condenser mic to the pre? Thanks!

You definitely want to switch the phantom on after making your connections. Aside from just getting some loud pops and bangs as the phantom power arcs (if your monitoring of those channels isn't muted), there is a possibility (relatively remote) of causing damage to your gear.
It's just good policy to plug everything in before turning phantom power on.

I would recommend you never unplug a condencer mic while the phantom power is on. Same for plugging in, you should have the power off.

Problem is... some boards have the phantom always on by default. It won't kill the mic. But if you have the option, wait until everything is connected before feeding 48 volts down the line.
Or you can wait for the assistant to taste the XLR terminals...

I understand the reasoning for turning phantom power on last.
Does it matter when you turn on the power to the mic pre with respect to connecting the mic?
Would you:
- make sure phantom power is turned off on the mic pre
- power on the mic pre
- connect the mic
- then turn on pantom power
or
- make sure phantom power is turned off on the mic pre (like above)
- connect the mic, i.e. make all connections first before turning on any power
- power on the mic pre
- then turn on pantom power

Keeping all power off while making your connections will certainly prevent any bangs or pops from traveling through your signal chain.
