Hey Guys,

The time has come when people are starting to request MP3 files. I downloaded an MP3 creator to convert my CD audio files. I note the default setting is 128kbps which brings the file in around 3.8mg. I wouldn't call that a small file, when emailing is that would be expected in an MP3. If I go smaller on the kbps rate it's probably going to sound bad right?

Urgent reply appreciated!

Sure, don't never go under 128.

Are you trying to email it? Most email servers will reject attachment files larger than 2M.

If using snail-mail or FedEx or whatever, then use the highest bit rate you can... Better yet, give them a CDR with the WAV file.

Another option is to use an FTP client to let them pull it off your PC (if you both have high-speed connections).

Is this a request for a sample of a mix? Would your client rip you off if you sent them the whole thing at hi-fi encoded rates?

When these things pop up, I'll send either a 10 second sample at 192K, or the whole thing at 64K, to protect my own interests. I always make it a point to attach a note that I'd happily ship them the full-length/full-fidelity product once their check clears my bank.

It's an unfortunate policy that I only extend to clients who have proved their lacked of honor & ethics by past actions....

Finally, I strongly recommend using RazorLAME to encode MP3 files - - it's the only one that will not phase, flange, delete, or chop up the top 2 octaves. And the price is right...

If it's for mix approval, send them a CD with a wav file. MP3 at any rate sucks at best, and is IMHO unusable for judging a mix.

Thanks.

It's for pitching songs to a project. I know the producer and trust him, he wants it on MP3 so he can send it to some A&R guys if he likes what he hears. The file is too big, so am I best just to send it on CD cause it's going to sound really bad, or is there a way at getting it under the 2mg size and having it still not suck too bad?
