I get low volume on my recordings....here is my audio chain---
Basically going out from keys into Delta1010.
I arm the track in Sonar and hit record.

I verify that the level is loud(almost clipping on the sonar level meter...).

But when I get done with the recording....and listen to it on the computer or anywhere else...the final volume is REALLY low compared to other commercial CD's.

So my question....If Sonar is showing that each of those audio tracks are almost peaking out....then why is the final volume so low?

What do those level meters indicate in Sonar? db? dbfs?--maybe that's the problem????

There's no problem with the meters in Sonar.

Nearly all "commercial" CD have gone through a process called mastering. In recent years, a lot of mastering has involved using severe compression, limiting, and even hard clipping distortion in order to achieve ridiculously high RMS (average) levels on CD.

Do a search on "mastering" and be prepared to do a lot of reading.

Have you also verified your audio card level settings? It could be that your CD volume is set much higher than your wav volume.

What does the wav form look like in Sonar? If the wav form never gets above, say, -12 dB than something's funny, but if it looks right (mostly filling the whitespace, with occaisional transients that go to 0 dB then your problem is /definately/ with your playback volumes, not the recording volumes.

I use an AKAI DPS16 to record and SoundForge 5.0 to "master"[yeah right! \:D ].

But I make sure I record as hot as possible without clipping [in my DPS16] I also use 2 ART TPS Preamps to record.

In SOundForge:Basically what I do is EQ where needed, normalize and raise the volume, and then compress so it won't clip.

Of course I'm experimenting I have no education on the recording field, I'm just trying to learn by messing around with stuff, one thing is certain I have no complaints about volume, and the general public say the recordings sound good, but I know there's more to it than what I'm doing
so I keep trying different things.
