For recording vocals of the heavier "industrial" style, which would you recommend?

SM58. The SM57 has such a tight pattern that any off axis movement by the talent results in a more noticable volume drop off. The SM58 has a bit more proximity effect in my experience, if the singer is going to eat the mike the entire time then perhaps the SM57 could work better. I would still start with the SM58, it is usually used for it's ability to withstand close proximity screaming (I mean withstand physically, not sonically!). I believe it is used often by NIN and Marilyn Manson for this reason. It's "smaller" sound can be easily eq'ed to peirce through the wall of distortion and cacophony typical of this style.

If it's only a choice between two mics, try 'em both, and hear which one sounds better with that singer's voice and style through your gear.

Thanks gang!

How about a good condenser mic? Would that be just a waste if I'm doing mostly harsher styles?

The problem becomes both the max SPL of the mic and the physical risk that you might be putting it in. The SM57/58 are dynamics and can take a hell of a hit without damage, on the otherhand, screaming directly into a condenser will not only sound bad but possibly damage it. Also, often the 58 is being used exactly as on stage by the singer, handheld. If you want to experiment, try putting up a dynamic up for the singer THEN a few feet back have a large condenser. Let the singer think they are singing into the dynamic. You can record both for use in different sections of the song.
