Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has upgraded their G4 towers with a dual processor G4 card from say, Powerlogix? Were there any problems with the install, or stability issues afterwards? Specifically I am using OS X on a G4 933 with Nuendo 2.0.1 and would like to know if there are any compatibility issues regarding these upgrade cards. Starting to feel the pinch with so many Waves and VST instruments! We're looking at the 1.2GHz Dual Processor upgrade from Powerlogix.

Sharing your experiences with other upgrade cards (Sonnet, Giga Designs, etc.) single or dual processors would be appreciated, as well.

We need this upgrade to be rock solid, as it's for a major facility here in Toronto, and we can't really have much downtime because of instability issues.

thanks!

Yeah I pumped up my G4 AGP 400 with a Power Logix 1.2 ghz single processor. They have a little utility you can download on their site that will tell you if your machine can handle a dual proc upgrade. My machine was pretty old, so it could only take a single proc upgrade. It rocks though, made the machine way faster and not a single problem ever.

Cool, jdunn. Thanks!

The issue with the dual processor was the "uni-n" thing, right? I ran into that issue with the first G4 I had, the 350 AGP tower. (in retrospect, I should have held on to that machine a bit longer and just upgraded it, but, oh well... \:\) It looks like (from Powerlogix's site) that that issue only affects that vintage of machine, and the newer Quicksilvers and so on can all accept dual processors.

Can I ask what programs you are using? OS9 or OSX?

Check out this thread

or The Xlr8 Your Mac page

I'm considering upgrading my dual 450 too. Prologix may not be the best card, but then again . . .

I'm not sure what the exact issue is, but the nice thing about Power Logix is that they provide the utility to check your machine before you buy an incompatible upgrade. Just go to Power Logix and download the PL Upgrade Guide (only 74 kb).

There may be subtle differences between brands, but for $600 the upgrade I got has been absolutely flawless. You can also find lots of info at Apple's site. Go to the support forum that corresponds to your machine.

For excellent free or cheap non-music software, I use Camino as my browser, Speed Download 2, Net Monitor, Net News Wire Lite, Password Master X, Duality, Fetch, Free Tar, Fax Center, Mac FLAC, and more. All OS X users should try 3DOSX for something really cool. These can all be found at Mac Update , or at Apple's OS X Downloads site. Duality themes and other cool stuff can be found at
Mac Motiva

For music, Peak, Spark XL, Lame Brain, Mac FLAC, Audion mp3 player, motu 896, etc....
