I have a setup of outboard mics pres, Mainly Brent Averill Api and Universal audio. All going to apogee converters and into nuendo. My question is does my computer cd burner matter? I noticed a difference when going digital out into a masterlink, but would prefer to have a high quality onboard burner. Is there such a thing?? If so what are some suggestions? I figure spending alot on mics and pres and converters, I shouldn't skimp on the burner.

Check out Plextor Premium, it's about as good as they get these days.

I am curious, you said you heard a difference going out to Masterlink? What was this difference?

It was less metallic sounding I guess, not as thin, I also did a spectrum analysis and found some subtle differences. Same kind of cd though.

So we are comparing a file bounce (16 bit) from Nuendo to a realtime take into Masterlink? Is that a 24 bit or 16 bit signal? (as Masterlink uses noise shaping to go to 16 from 24 which would explain a difference in spectrum analysis.)

the mixdown was done in nuendo dithering down to 16 bit (uv22hr). The only difference was of burning the file to cd from soundforge, and streaming it out via spidif to the mastelink. But regardless, my question still stands any advantage to a highquality burner, any recommendations as far as an onboard burner??

Plextor is the way to go, IMO.

The masterlink sucks. it is only good for storing your files. when you burn a cd it does not dithere and it destroys the mix. Use you computer. Since I got rid of my masterlink I have had my mixes sound much better

It all depends on whether you trust your BTD (another can of worms). I have always gone with the idea of writing to disk directly as opposed to streaming/recording externally. The Plextor has been the choice of many respected mastering engineers with great investment in their chains so I don't think you need look further than that.

Sonic offers a new burner optimized for low speed burning. Expensive, but there are some mastering houses using it. http://www.sonicstudio.com/products_hardware_options.html

We still use the Masterlink--works fine for our clients.....Direct out AES === from the RBus of a Roland VS 2480....if there are not so many choices (different DAWS/Analog Systems + variable CD burners) in front of a client for confusion >>> they are not left questioning. If they come to the table with a select certain chain of gear,,,yes, then you must offer ---- if they can pay.........Why make things more trying for you & the consumer ^^^^^^^

If you don't mind me asking -
1.) What about the Plextor Premium makes it so good?
2.) Which model are you talking about, or does it make a difference?

For link to more details/review, scroll down this page: CDR-Info
2. I would avoid the USB version.

The Yamaha burners with "advanced audio mode" are also excellent. This technology is for real, and I don't see anything like it mentioned on the Plextor site.
No idea if the Yamahas are better or worse than the current Plextors, but they are reasonably priced, and definitely make better sounding cd's than my G4's burner. I'm VERY happy with my F1.
The Plextore's ability to actually measure low level errors (bler errors?) is pretty cool, but the Yamaha actually DELIVERS less errors. Hmmmm.
I'd like to get a Plextor just to check my Yamaha......

I bet Yamaha F1 is a good burner. I have an old scsi 4416 that still rocks. Unfortunately, Yamaha has bowed out of making such products alltogether.
