I am going to try this again. I got a postcard in the mail for a Pro-Tools Mixing Master Class with Roger.
Has anyone here been to one of these?
There is going to be one right down the block from where I live. I am considering attending.
Oh yeah; It aint' free.

I went to the 2nd session he did a couple of years ago - very worthwhile if you are interested in how Roger gets Steely Dan to sound so good or just good solid recoding tips in general - if you are looking for "fix it in the mix", you might be dissapointed.
At least that was the Mastering Class and it really had little to do with ProTools and everything to do with engineering. Not cheap, but damn - I'm a die hard Dan fan and it was an eye-opener for me. I'm still working on what I learned and probably always will be.

I recieved a PDF file e-mail today and actually, it is a Mixing Master Class in which he will be using a PTHD rig and mixing in the box.
I work exculusively in a DAW enviroment these days and though I do not currently own a PTHD rig, I still thought it might be a worthwhile endeavor.
Mixing the the area of engineering I an the least proficient in.
Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not a PT user either, but I found it very worthwhile. And these days, knowing how to get around a bit in PT never hurts.

I use PTle, PT tdm, and PTHD, and I am very capable of using the PT app for tracking and editing. It's the mixing where I need some help.
Lets face it. Most of us can probably dial up a decent rough mix with just level and panning. The devil is in the details, which is why so many complain about DAW's in the first place. Just because you have a high end workstation doesn't mean that your an engineer.
Mixing is my engineering weakness so I think I am going to check it out.
Thanks for you replies.

And since Roger is one of the pioneers of both digital and "in the box" I imagine his perspective will be quite educational. Gee Rog, don't you know all the "experts" on yours and George's forum have "used their ears" to determine PT sucks? Sorry, I don't allow myself to be involved with those discussions anymore so that comment was my "big night out"! I hope all this verbage makes it clear that was a joke!!!
I did not recieve anything in the mail for Roger's clinics, is there an online calendar?

It looks interesting & essential to me but I can't seem to find a schedule for the class in the San Fran Bay area - here's Rogers web page. Maybe I just can't navigate today !

Actually, I believe that the fee for the Mixing Master Class with Roger Nichols is $499.00.
It is a one day 8 hour class.
I am not sure but I think that the $995.00 fee is for the PT certification classes that are multiple days.

I would be certain that Roger gets paid very well for these things, as he should.
With the proliferation fo PT, and DAW's in general, it makes sense for an engineer to find other revenue streams than were avalaible in the past.
In my experience when working with a "Name" mixing engineer, they are not usually very fond of sharing their secrets. To spend a day with someone of Rogers caliber, and have a chance to pick his brain is more than worth the price they are asking.
At least in my opinion.

$995,- for one day right?
Jotown if you think it's worth the money then do it ofcourse.
With how many students together?
Sorry to say but I smell something which I don't like.

It is a one day 8 hour class. I don't think that 500 dollars is an unfair fee to spend for an afternoon with Roger Nichols, or any engineer of his caliber.
Especially in a focused class enviroment.
The workshop was this weekend and I could not attend due to my schedule. If it comes back around I will be sure to make it.

it depends with how many people you are sitting.
3?, 4-5-6-7-8 how many?
That was my question.

I don't know what the class size typically is.

Well, I'm speaking for myself ofcourse. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally not a cynical guy.
There is only one thing you have to keep in mind. Roger Nichols is not the only one who is responsible for steely dan's sound.
Take it from me, if you work with top musicicans it's much easier to work and to mix then if you have to record the "not so good ones".
And another thing is that these people have much more time to do their thing. This is not with artists without that kind of budget.
Then you have to record and mix in with a little luck in 3-4 days.
Ask Sign for that.
