A company I have purchased a new DAW from is recommending a touch screen control surface that mounts on the monitor to control faders and such. Has anyone tried one of these or is using one?

I friend of mine got an old touch screen monitor for free from someone, it used to be part of some retail checkout system or something...anyway he plugged it up and says amazingly that it works with Nuendo, can move the faders and everything. But my guess is it's a bit difficult dealing with the smaller things like the pan pods and stuff, I would spend that extra money on a universal control surface like maybe the mackie stuff if you want an alternative to the mouse, it would be quicker and easier to use I bet, real faders, knobs, and buttons .

The Mackie X that is being shown at AES this weekend is supposedly some kind of touch control surface.
I'm sure someone will post on this soon.

Some of us have worked in other areas involving computers and interfaces, and I can tell you from experience that it gets real old to have to reach out and touch the screen to do work. Not the best input device.

Well, that is a far cry from what was originally asked about. Understand that this is a new console, it is still under development, it has no firm release date, and most importantly, it is Version One. If you have learned anything about new software and hardware for computer based music, it should have been that you should NEVER buy Version One of ANYTHING.
The board looks good. It feels good. There are some questions that we had right out of the gate, but those mostly related to what it didn't do. What it does do is pretty cool. We can talk about what it isn't all day long, but when we start to talk about what it is and what it does, it handles itself rather well.
Anything accessable via the touch screen is also accessable via the mouse or via hard controls.
The menus don't get deep... you are basically one click from most things.
But touch screens still are not as great to work with as people who don't work with them think that they are. Imagine reaching out to make any changes or movements, every change, for 6 to 12 hours a day. Bulk up those shoulders, that's for sure.
And we haven't heard the mic pres yet, and we haven't tried to sync it up to anything, and the fact that each firewire stream only handles 24 channels is rather a limiting factor in a 72 channel console, not something to get excited about. The internal CD drive is a CDROM only, data only; rather than a DVD or CDDA writer. VST implimentation requires Mackie-approved plugs, which seems uncool on the surface, but is probably a very good thing. And the availablility of three internal expansion card slots (one already filled with a UAD-1 card....) for Power Core or UAD-1s or whatever else might be devloped to fit.... that's not a bad thing.

That's cool, but if you can put $1000 on it you can get something like this: http://www.mackie.com/products/mackiecontrol/index.html The upside here is that it's expandable, so you can add more faders and controls later as you get more $$.

I thought at first that i would want more fader packs, but afrer using it for a while, I find that I am more interested in the expander for the control section. I don't mind bank switching to jump around the faders.

Since I just got back from AES, I should mention the new CM controller that I saw. Pretty neat, it's a new take on theit MotorMix idea. And there is always the new TASCAM fw 1884.

Anyone see that movie "Minority Report"? How Tom Cruise's character navigates the visual interface in determining a crime that's about to happen? I couldn't help but realize that pretty soon, that's how we're going to look making records.

Touch screen rocks, but the applications UIs should be revritten to match the space need of a touch screen, larger buttons, and so on.
