Just got the 828mkII recently and still learning a lot about how to use it and could use some tips on its features. It mentions of an option to switch between a +4dB and a -10dB reference level for when adjusting parameters for input level settings. What's the difference and when would you use that particular setting?
Also, it mentions of gain settings for the inputs switchable between off, -84, and 0dB. If I'm connecting an external pre-amp and compressor into this particular input, which setting would be most appropriate? Thanks a lot for any tips and advice!! Take care!

They are different reference levels.
+4 dBu or -10 dBV
Basically to get the same meter level at the input two different voltage references are available. It's often considered that +4 is for professional gear and -10 for semi-pro or consumer. But don't take that as any gospel.
(These numbers are for example and may not be accurate)
To get the SAME recording meter reading of -18
At -10 dBV reference = .4 volts At +4 dBu reference = .775 volts
Mainly what you need to make sure of is what each peice of gear you have uses as a reference. If your mixer or mic pre etc. use the +4 dBu reference, set the recorder to the same. This should be clear in any manuals.
If you notice that..
1. No matter how high the output of the mic pre is the recording level seems too low
It's Likely That:
The Mic Pre is a -10 unit and the recorder is at +4.
If....
2. You always get distortion or have to turn the mic pre way down.
It's Likely That:
The Mic Pre is a +4 unit and the recorder is at -10
