i have both the benchmark media dac and the apogee mini dac and am looking for the best way to compare these units. my team (the two of us) have tested each thru their headphone amps and hear a distinctive difference but believe this isn't to be trusted. it is desired to reference thru monitors but a device that functions as speaker switcher isn't available for this test. we are referencing from cd and have pro tools available.

Oh, finally ! I myself have mini DAC and find it sounding amazing and very clean (comparing to previous Digi 001 DA). It would be highly interesting to hear DAC1 and mini DAC shootout. I don't know about any scientific method, but if I have both at home, I would simply listen to several sources (CDs, sessions, tracks etc.) - short excerpt each, piece by piece alternatively switching between both units. And the ears would tell me something ... If I switch between 001, mini DAC and a common CD player, it tells a lot ...

honestly, there wasn't a defining difference between the two when listening thru monitors (HD1's). as i mentioned before the headphone amps sound different where the level on the benchmark dac is hotter and has more air on the top end. we tested both using seal, jay z, wendy carlos, and traditional classical recordings. our conclusion is that both units are fantastic. i'm still curious of what the process others have used to compare these units other than putting them on a bench and testing with a scope.
