I need to buy an external outboard processor for my home studio, which is a Roland VS2480. I have purchased some "high end" gear to improve the quality of the recordings (avalon 737, rosetta 800, AKG 414 ). I will be using the external processor for vocals and 6 & 12 string guitars. Everything else is recorded direct. My question is the quality of the reverb between the two units. Does it make sense to go with the PCM81 because of all the additional effects that are available in the unit which I would definitely use. Or is the reverb in PCM91 noticeably better?
I happen to like the sound of reverb and chorus on guitar and vocals so if I go with the PCM91, that would mean the addition of another external unit.

And yes, funds are limited.

Thanks

I have both but if i were in your shoes i would go with the 81. The reverb from the 81 isn't really any worse than the 91, there's just less variety to choose from. You can do a heck of a lot with the 81, especially if you also get the dual effects card, which you should be able to find for about $50.

Yes, you can get some pretty thick sounding chorus AND reverb sounds from the 81 simultaneously, expecially with that dual effects card.

If you need more than reverb than there is no choice between them. But the PCM90/91 is a much better reverb. The PCM90/91 are the reverbs from the M300/300L which are from the 480L. The PCM80/81 reverbs are from the PCM70.

You might check out an Eventide Eclipse with it's dual engine and run 1-2 reverbs combined with something else. The Eclipse has what the PCM80/81 has and much more.

I don't have experience with any of these, (I have TC M3000) but I've always heard the PCM70 v2.0 has a good selection of the classic "lush" reverbs Lexicon is known for.

Are you saying the 80/81 has those? (I would prefer a digital connection)

And does the Eclipse really do "lush" reverb - like Lexicon?

Thanks

The PCM70 was lush but had some grain and it's noise level was less than stellar. The PCM80/81 has updated, cleaner and noise free reverbs, but many still prefer the PCM70. The PCM80/81 has other things better and many other features that the PCM70 dosn't have or do.

The reverb in the Eclipse is different just as the TC reverbs are different. I would say the reverbs in the Eclipse are inbetween the PCM80/81 and the TC M2000/M5000 or the non VSS3 reberbs in the M3000. Some are closer to the Lexicon and some are closer to the TC. With the Eclipse you get dynamics, filters, distortions and preamps that are not in the Lexicon or TC units.
