Anybody know what the average DAW track count is for given system information?
I'm running a P4 1.8 w/256mb RAM, Audiophile card w/XP OS. I'm currently running Cubase SX (does it vary from app to app?) I'm only curious so I can plan my projects around the expectation. I do know that plug-ins, etc will bring track count down, but I'm just curious about raw track count.
Thanks!

Hey, I'm running something similar. I'm running logic 5.5 platinum with a p4 1.8, but I have 756mb of ram. I can get 24 tracks with around 6 softsamplers/synths running before I start running into probs. All 24 tracks are not running at the same time. I also have a uad-1 card(plugs are a world better, plus take a load off the cpu). Between the uad-1 and waves/logic plugs, I can run 24 tracks with 20-30 plugs without difficulty. The best thing I did was investing in a dsp card(uad-1). It has added a ton of power to what I can do. Like you, I run an maudio card(delta1010). Hope this helps. Any more ?'s Just reply. Erosity

i notice my comp freaks when i add too many plugs. i have a P4 2.53 with 512ram two 80gig western digital 8mb-cache drives. do i need more ram? or do i have to many processes running in the background? and if i upgrade my ram do i need to buy the same brand i already have? would 1024ram make a huge difference in how many plugs i can use on a mix before cubase sx freaks out? i'm mixing 20 or so tracks usually with a lot of plugs. waves and blue tubes mostly. the blue tubes plugs take a lot of cpu. any advice on what i can do to make mixing with plugs easier on my system?

I'm one of the old guys, from the old school. I've been working with digital audio since the 80s and computer based DAWs since the early 90s, when they were severely limited by todays standards. But to us, they were a burst of freedom in editing. When working with reel to reel in the 70s and 80s, we didn't HAVE 24 compressors, or reverbs (or tracks, most of the time.... 8 and 16 were far more normal) to add to the tracks individually. So we did submixes, and moved on. But we knew what we wanted to hear, too. If you render effects to files instead of making your computer re-compute the effects for every playback, you dramatically lessen the load.
In terms of RAM, 've been using 3 or 4 gigs for about 4 years. My new machine has only 2, and I've not had any trouble yet.

I gotta agree with Mr. Bill on rendering... I routinely do it whenever my CPU or disk meter starts pushing up past 60% - - I don't have time to dick around with dropouts...
Anyway, here's my info:
Dual Celerons at 550MHz (the Mobo is an ABIT BP6 with some custom mods) 750MB Ram 15G and 18G Maxtor drives Sonar XL WinXP
Recording 8 tracks during 36 track playback at 24 bit / 44.1 KHz, with 'normal' set of plugins (5 or 6 compressors, 3 or 4 EQs, 1 or 2 reverbs).
Recording 8 tracks during 8 track playback at 24 bit / 96 KHz, with no plugs... (I think I'd need more CPU & a faster Front Side Bus to do much better than that.. But I only use this setting for small acoustic acts and tape restoration / digitizing work...

I have an Athalon XP1800+ and get over 100 tracks with plugs (went down slightly when I stepped 'up' from a 2meg buffer Maxtor to a WD with 8meg buffer. 768 DDR (2100) SONAR 2.2 XL (Now Sonar3, but I haven't used that many tracks yet). M-Audio Delta 1010's
Number of plugs depend on my latency, so I set it low for tracking (thanks Alndln) then bump it up alot for mixing. With latency at a medium level, I can run over 100 tracks plus plug-ins.
