Still not clear on this dual HD thing....
So now I got a nice secondary hard drive in my machine for audio files and recording (like is recommended). I'm still confused about two things:
1) Should the secondary hard disk be configured as a slave to the master hard disk on the same IDE channel, or should it be connected to the second IDE channel?
2) Obviously the second HD is for audio files (.wav, etc...), but is there anything else that should be ideally installed on the second drive? Any of the music apps like my DAW, or should the programs still run off the master disk?
Thanks, yall!

1)configure the audio drive as master on the second ide bus. system drive as master and cdr/dvdr as slave on primary.
2)yes the best thing is to keep it simple and just use the drive for projects(audio/midi).

Is step #1 very important? I already have my secondary drive slaved to the master disk, while my CD-RW and CD-ROM are both on the second IDE. Can I leave this setup, or should I move the audio HD to the second IDE channel?

It's better to have them each as "master"...but if your OS and audio drives are of equal caliber then you may be OK for non-intensive audio work.
See...when they are set up as Master/Slave...then they are both using, and possibly competing for the same “pathways”.
Also, if the OS/Master drive is slower...it will bring your audio drive down to its level...so if you purchased a faster audio drive, you may not see the benefit.
Take the 15 minutes to pop open the case...switch the jumpers and switch the cables...and you are done.

I'll still need to slave either the burner or the CD-ROM to it though. Is that still cool?

That's OK...just Master/Salve the two that are least likely to be used at the same time.
Like...
OS/Master - CDROM/Slave
and
Audio/Master - CDRW/Slave.
I think that will be the best combination.

IDE 1- system drive (master) audio/files drive(slave) IDE 2-Optical drive (master) audio/files/backup drive(slave)
You may have problems booting to disc if your optical (CD/DVD) drive is set to slave.
Your OS, and all your applications get loaded onto the master drive.
Any file you create from the applications (not jsut DAW, it works for any application) goes on the audio/files or audio/files/backup drive.

Okay, here's how I have mine set up.
60 G Maxtor---Master, for Audio programs
10G Maxtor----Slave, for Internet
On a seperate cable...
DVD player----Master
CDRW----------Slave
To access the 10G, I go into Bios and select the 60 G drive and select NONE, which disables it, reboot and the 60G disappears and the 10G runs the system. To re-engage the 60G drive, I go into Bios and select the master drive again, and select AUTO, reboot and the 60G drive comes back on and shows the 10G drive in the system.
Using this setup the 60G drive is isolated from the internet and protects it from viruses.
Both drives are setup to use either audio programs or internet, as desired, but mainly I just use the 10G for internet, but it's good to have a back-up drive setup. I can access the internet from the 60G drive for downloading programs and updates.
It all seems to work okay for me.

So it seems like another whatever works best issue? I can see why having the audio only HD on a separate IDE channel than the OS/master HD would make some sense. I just hope I'm at least doing some good having an additional drive for audio, even if it is on IDE 1 slaved to the OS/master.
