i am new here, so iŽd like to say, that this is a real nice forum here....

i want to connect a mackie d8b , a motu 896 , and some digital fx. as hd-rec. i am using logic on mac. the d8b and the 896 are connected via adat optical for recording and mixing, but also via aes/ebu, because i want to record my final mix back to logic via aes/ebu.
the fx are connected via aes/ebu as well. so my quest is
what kind of settings for the digital clock i should choose in logic, motu, d8b and the fx. should i choose adat optical or aes/ebu? what device should be the master?

thanx in advance...

peace

probably the Mackie - altho you should try all configutations and see which one sounds the best. Best results might be had by adding a dedicated hi quality clock - such as made by apogee, aardvark, lucid, etc

FatBoy,

basically I agree with Edmann to appoint the console as the master or to buy a dedicated master clock generator.

In the case that you need to synchronize different devices the word clock output at the Mackie would not be enough - if you want to avoid to daisy chain the clock lines between the devices. So, as an alternative I would recommend to use a word clock distribution amplifier which is of course not the same as a master clock but could help for the first time.
Please feel free to check also our websites mentioned below for master clocks (e.g. SMART CLOCK) or clock distribution amplifiers (e.g. DISTRIBUTOR ws).

Regarding your question about the line you should use for clocking, in principal I would recommend to take an AES/EBU line instead of an ADAT line. The AES/EBU line or connection should normally carry lower jitter levels.

Regards, Christian.

Christian,

I have heard a similar comment made before. Would you care to elaborate on that. What is it that makes Lightpipe more "Jittery?"

Yorik,

please see my statement in the thread:

SPDIF Digital Audio Routing. 75 ohm or 110 ohm?, started from Starlight.
