I'm a struggling novice with mixing. I'm trying to mix a bass guitar track in with piano, drums, and pad/choir.
The bass guitar was played on a synth. The volume and velocity of each note was pretty even. But, in the mix, some notes "boom" through, others disappear. The attack seems to interfere with the mid range of the piano, but if I try to eq out a little mid from the bass, I lose the guitar sound. Cutting below about 80Hz on the bass seems to help get rid of the boom, but still not great.
I've been compressing the bass track, which has helped, but I still have the problems I mentioned.
I'm trying to get that smooth bass sound, that comes through clear, fills in the low end, but doesn't "boom".
By the way, this is just a home recording rig. I'm using Cubase 5.1; for compressor and eq I use Trackplug, also I have PSP Vintage Warmer, and I often use Blockfish or Endorphin for compression as well.
Any tips or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Oooh- I love the Blockfish for some stuff- kinda 70's thing going on... not having heard the tracks you're mentioning blah blah, but you might try rounding up the EQ around 180-230Hz- not a real wide band but not too narrow either- and rolling off the low end around 50Hz- and do this before you hit the compresser- this might help get where you wanna go.
