I was happy enough to get my G4 with a superdrive..; but compare to todays dvd rdives its not a bargin anymore.

As for software, you can't go wrong with toast.

I am pleased with the LaCie Firewire Combo burner ($299 direct from Lacie). It does CD-R's , DVD-R AND DVD+R (4x for DVD's). I use Toast 5.2.1 Be aware (as I just recently posted here) that OSX/10.2.6 needs to be patched to recognize DVD+R's on the desktop (to read them back) but will burn them just fine with the Lacie and Toast. DVD-R's are fine.

For archive the DVD format is great, no moving parts, and will most likely be arund for awhile. However for ongoing backup, HDD is much more practical, and much faster.

I bought a Pioneer DVR106 and slapped it into an Oxford 911 based FireWire case and it works like a charm in OS9.2.2.

That is the same drive inside the Lacie. Are +R's OK in 9.2.2?

Don't know about +R's as all I am doing is burning data to DVDR.

20gb to DVD=5 discs (4.2 usable space on a DVD) 30 min /disc=2.5 hours.
20gb to HDD=20 minutes on a slow computer.

For long term archive we do both. For daily backups we use HDD. the timesavings equates to a much cheaper method IMHO.
