i'm thinking of getting more RAM. i have 512 now.
i think the speed is 330 or something like that (not sure) it wasn't cheap ram, but i want to get something really good. do i have to buy the same brand i have already? if i want kingston RAM, do i need to throw out my 512mb ram chip i already bought? just wondering what i should do. i want to be able to run more tracks and plugs when i mix. is 1024mb enough? i don't track to my computer so that's not a problem. thanks for any help you can offer.

As long as all your RAM chips are the same speed. Even if they are not the same speed they will both work, only they will run at the slowest chips speed. ( 1xpc100 and 1xpc133= 2xpc100, same with DDR RAM) You just make sure you use 2 quality brands of RAM and you should have no problem using different brands of RAM. I know that some will say you should use the same brands together only, and If you can,try to use the same brands, but there should not any noticeable difference in performance. as far performance difference using SDRAM vs DDR, unless you have a motherboard with a front bus that is 333mhz or above, you won't see any real speed boost using DDR over SDRAM. Here are 2 bench tests using the same motherboard and eveyhing for both kinds of RAM.

3DMark 2001

This benchmark is mainly test out the GPU performance. And as you can see the difference is as expacted, with little difference (less than 3%). Keep that in mind, the only factor has changed in between test is the type of memory.

3DMark 2001
SDRAM 133MHz 2623
DDR 266Mhz 2699

CliBench

CliBench is a Win32 application designed for measuring your system's performance. You can test raw CPU power, the computers memory interface and the harddisks transfer speed.

Benchmark DDR 266MHz SDRAM 133MHz

Dhystone 2.1 2209 0% 2209
Whetstone 498 0% 498
8 Queens problem 3623 +1.8% 3558
Matrix Ops 65596 +0.6% 65212
Number Crunch 64917 +2.8% 63172
Floating Point 4285 0% 4285

CPU Mark99

CPUMark 99 is made by Ziff Davis Media. CPUMark99 scores are representative of a CPU's relative performance on standard business applications. Scores are not representative of overall system performance, but reflect the performance of the CPU and the memory subsystem.

CPUMark 99
SDRAM 133MHz 78.8
DDR 266Mhz 82.4

So buy DDR RAM 333mhz or faster if you want to switch from SDRAM to DDR.
I hope I have answered you question for you, If not send another post to clairify.
