... And how can I avoid it?
I carve away some 1-2k and that seems to help.
But does mic placement (distance/angle) have anything to do with it?
Processing?
How do YOU avoid it?
Thanks,

Singer should open his or her mouth and project more.

I think it's a certain way of speech that causes a resonance of sorts in the sinus cavities. If you talk with a fake nasal voice, you can (or at least I can) feel it in your nasal sinuses. Nothing to be done, really, except AEW's suggestion. Singing lessons might help.

But if you're talking about recordings sounding nasal and the vocalist DOESN'T, then try a different mike, peerhaps large diameter diaphragm, Neumann U87 or equivalent (AT4033, Neumann TLM103, etc.)
Move the singer back a coupple inches, and don't overdrive the mike pre.

Nasal, phoney and peaky voice ? 1.Reiterate with the singer the basics of vocal technique : - get him to use her/his diaphragm to push a larger volume of air onto his/her resonators. -check the registers - often notes that should resonate within the chest get forced by the singer to resonate in the mouth/nasal cavity. That may be a style but it can sound so nasty, especially when the vocalist hits his vocal chords hard. -if it's Geddy Lee : don't bother 2. Check out your large membrane mikes BUT NOT your Neumanns!!!! through any iron transformer coupled pre - Focusrites go a long way to dampen offending nasalities (RED7 - my pick for nasal, female vocs.) while Neumanns with their 5k "pinch" often worsen the problem. -check mouth-to-mic distances -ther "gold" lawson tube is an outsanding "contour" mic -Rode Classic is good for lo-budget anti-nasality campaigns 3. Slap on some deesser shit and tune it well: - years ago I used BSS but Waves WILL do

Mic-to-mouth distance is a study of its own. It depends on so many aspects of the session that there is not one recommendation that I could recommend. Example: there seldom is a workable distance for capturing classicaly trained voices in small recording spaces; like iso booths... The key here is to really get into the vocalists head, you have to know his/her dynamic and frequency range, the stamina and sense of humor. Then you can begin to adjust to what the song calls for, maybe you can have a role in how the vocalist delivers. So in fact you have to don your producer white moccasins and roll a fatty. WARNING : do not dope singers, their intonation WILL go to pieces. Be doctor Feelgood, relax and listen, then maybe you can hear something else besides the nose, something worth recording. That said, it's always worth having at least three different vocal signal chains, like one for the intimate, proximity effect based vocals (0cm-5cm ), second for generic (15cm-1.5m) and third for ambient effect (providing you have a good room) My 2c
