I have the following computer setup for a mini home recording rig:
Win ME Cubase 5.1 vst, Cool edit 2000, couple soft synths AMD K7 1.33gHz Asus A7V133 board corsair 512 MB ram Riva TNT video card maxtor system drive 30 gig ata100 7200 rpm d: maxtor 40 gig 7200 rpm for audio SBlive Pt used for midi ports only MAudio 2496 for audio and midi cd-rw ethernet card
When I installed the soundcards (about 2 yrs ago), I went through great effort to get them on their own IRQ's. I ended up disabling everything that said "USB" in the bios and Win ME Control Panel, and kept reisntalling the cards in different slots. Eventually they ended up on their own irq's.
I just got a USB printer and I just re-enabled the USB ports. Sure enough the SBlive and MAudio card are on the same IRQ.
I just realized I don't even know what an IRQ is...is it really important how the IRQ's are assigned? Should I worry about this?
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks Pete

First, let me say that ME is prety wretched, and a lot of things are easier in either Win98SE or Win2k or WinXP. I have been quite happy with WinXP, in spite of the copy protection thing that drives me nuts and is quite insulting.
I don't think that you are going to see many problems with IRQs.... its sort of an olderproblem that has been superceeded. But consider a better OS.

I remember it being a big deal with ISA slots, but not so with PCI.
Steinberg tech support had me get my soundcards on their own IRQ's when I once had a Cubase problem. But the IRQ thing had nothing to do with the problem and was a major hassle.
Since I re-enabled the USB stuff in the bios and Win device manager, the computer won't shutdown, so I'm dealing with that problem for the moment.
Win XP is likely what I'll use next (some day), but changing op systems now would be a massive undertaking. I shudder at the thought. Win ME has not been unbearable so far.

Bill IRQ assignment is definitely not only a problem with older OS. I have XP and had my UAD-1 card and delta 1010 were sharing the same IRQ and I had major dropouts whenever I would go over 12 tracks of playback with an almost 2Ghz AMD cpu. Changing PCI slots did nothing. Setting the mixing latency buffer to 1536 samples (34ms latency) did nothing. The only thing that helped was going into the BIOS and disabling the parallel port, serial port and basically everything else that wasnt audio related but XP deemed worthy of giving its own IRQ. The next boot up had the UAD-1 and delta 1010 on its own IRQ and the dropouts gone. Upgrading to more memory made things even smoother.

The problem I have is that when I enable the USB ports, my 2 soundcards share the same IRQ. I went through a painful exercise of swapping cards to different slots with no success. With the 2 soundcards on the same IRQ, Win ME locks up when I shutdown.
To make a long story short, I returned the USB printer and I plan to get a parallel one like I had before.
In the future, I plan to make my DAW computer dedicated for audio (e.g. no internet), and I plan to switch to XP. I also plan to ditch the SB card and get something like a USB midisport since I only use the SB for midi ports.
Couple questions about XP: 1. What type of copy protection? Do I need internet connection to register it? Can I install one copy on 2 machines?
2. Thoughts on Pro vs home ed?
3. Install in Standard mode or ACPI?
Thank again for responses

Pete, try this site, http://www.musicxp.net/ and read up on the XP/audio stuff. You will find answers to some of your questions there, and if you follow links from that site there's even more. Seems to be good quality information, too.
Oh, you cannot run one copy of XP on two computers without some hacking. I have bought XP now for each of my machines and have been quite happy with it. "Activation" has been painless.
