I'm looking to buy a new harddisk for my DAW. My WD disk have had serious failures, even though it's just 2 years old.

When buying a harddisk for a DAW what are your main concerns? What brands do you feel are the most stable and reliable?

Share your experiences.

Over the years, I have had trouble with every brand currently on the market.

Western Digital has become my recent favorite. They have the performance in the WD600JB/WD1200JB series (60GB/120GB, respectively). The "JB" designator indicates fluid cooled bearings -- quiter and more durable bearings. And, they still honor a 3-year warranty. Sounds like you can get yours replaced. Check their web site... Western Digital Support Center .

I used to be a fan of Maxtor. But, they have changed in th elast couple of years. They merged with Quantum and started using their single bearing with pivot bushing design. They start this whining sound after the pivot bushing wears, which is about 6 months or so. And, they dropped their warranty support down to 1 year, too.

I could go on about the others. But, no point...

The bottom line is that any drive is prone to failure. THe best insurance is to back up! Hope you didn't lose any important data...

we use the WD Caviar drives exclusively in our Firedock firewire drives, and in our Mac G-4.

Check with WD, your drive may still be covered under warrantee.

We've had good luck with Maxtors, but prefer the speed of the Caviars. the IBM/Hitachi drives are good as well.

Check priciing via http://www.pricewatch.com for best pricing online.

Best bet is either the Western Digital JB as already mentioned or the Seagate Barracuda V or newer 7200.7.

"JB" is for Jumbo Buffer...the 8 Meg buffer that WD is been known for a little while now.
Of course now other brands are doing it too (Hitachi/IBM deskstar)..

I've had good luck with both IBM Ultrastar and WD drives, both SCSI and IDE. IBM once produced a "bad" batch of Ultrastars, but those problems has been sorted out long ago.

I've had some failure with old Maxtor-drives.

All drives will eventually fail. Keep the drives cool, free of dust and away from static, and you can prolonge their lives. At least I hope so...

Thank you for your inputs so far. (Didn't know there was so many norwegians here as well).

I would also love to hear your opinions and experiences on Serial-ATA. It's seems pretty clear that S-ATA is the future but should we wait longer(compability/price issues)? Also, what do you feel are the best S-ATA disks? I've seen WD, Seagate, and maxtor around.

I'm looking forward to hear your opinions

Actually they were deskstars, not ultrastars, and it was about two years ago. IBM made good on all the failed drives, and got the bad batch off the market pretty quick, however the damage was done.

I currently use a 30 gb deskstar as my system disk, it's a couple of years old. I tried to use it in my Yamaha sampler, but that didn't work for some reason. I have heard bad things about the deskstars on other occasions as well. Works fine as a system disk though.

Deskstars were all the rage about 3-4 years ago, then they blew up. I had two go down on me. Not a good thing.

Three of the four drives in my box are Deskstars - never had a bit of trouble with any of them. All are over two years old.

You had a HD go down on you!!??

Sorry. Actual age 36. Mental age 14.

Anyway. For mine all of the above suggestions are valid. My addition to this list is to say. When you decide on yr Drive of choice, Buy 2.
Mirror everything you do from one to the other.
So you will always have an extra version that exists outside of yr backups, That you can go to in the case of emergency.
Unless they both die at the same time, which I hope is an unlikely event.

Drives are pretty cheap these days.

You know I thought about this as I typed it and said -nah! Nobody's going to go there! Oops! :p

But I agree with you. I don't exactly mirror everything, but I do multiple back everything up.

Had to comment - SCSI drives offer the best for audio recording - Seagate drives are the best of those. Been through them all. Look at what Digidesign puts in "their" drives. You choose.

If quality matters, 15k rpm drives, not too large is needed, back up on any format (twice). Good luck.

Yes SATA is the future. Compability only resides in having a motherboard with S-ATA on-board(best)or getting a S-ATA PCI card. The prices aren't that far off. If you take a look at http://www.mwave.com product catalog you'll see that the Seagate Ultra ATA and S-ATA 120gb are only $10 difference and the 80gb only $8 apart. Of course you'll have to spend a whopping  $6.90 for a S-ATA cable.

Has anybody tried the Western Digital Raptor drives with 10000 rpm and 8 mb level 3 cache? They're coming in 60 or 80 mb versions now as well (don't remember exactly).

Otherwise, to sum up my experiences and inputs from this thread and others:

WD: Good, good warranty (JB series)
Seagate: Good, stable, reliable (Barracuda V)
Maxtor: Not that good anymore, bad warranty.
IBM: Mixed experiences. "Consumer disks"?
Hitachi: Good

I've been using SCSI drives for ten years now and never had one fail. I've gone through about four IDE drives.

If I add up the wasted hours, lost information, and cost of replacement drives because the IDE failures, the SCSI drives have been an incredible bargain.

Western Digital w/ 8meg buffer are great as are the Seagate 'Cudas for SCSI.

Had problems with the Maxtor drives in the past.... but others that I know use them without a problem.

The best online source for hard drive reviews is StorageReview.com .
They have the most consistent and reliable drive testing methodology around and they've tested just about every drive that's been in production since '98. Post this question on their forums and you'll be awash in expert opinions from some folks who really know their hard drives.
In case anyone's intersted, the new "JB" killer is Hitachi's (nee IBM's) new Deskstar 7K250. In terms of pure performance this one really puts out, but we'll have to wait and see if it doesn't turn into another "Deathstar" (anyone who owned an IBM Deskstar 75GXP probably knows what I'm talking about).

No, I don't work for StorageReview.com
:p

Peace,

Piyono
