I'm looking at purchasing a Fostex D-160. It's got 16-tracks, 18 & 20-bit converters, and dithers to 16-bits.

What's the actual audible difference between 16 & 20/24-bit dithering/recording? I want to use this machine for pro recordings. Should I bite the bullet ($$$) and go for one of the other machines? They are more money and less tracks. (ie. the Fostex has 16 tracks the ADAT has 8).

Is a 16-bit machine worth it?

Thanks,

Ed Forero

Again I stress, it is not the machine but what you do with it. Any female engineer will tell you the SIZE DOES NOT MATTER!!!

24 bit does sound better than 16 bit... every day! But sometimes it doesn't matter as much as other times.

The last Bela Fleck album that I worked on was all done in Pro Tools at 24 bits. With the few instruments and the openness it was easy to hear the difference.

The new Steely Dan album that shipped yesterday was all done 16 bit on the Sony 3348 48 track digital machine and in Pro Tools at 16 bits. We did it 16 bits because we already had the 16 bit 48 track machine, and Pro Tools started choking when playing back 64 tracks of 24 bit audio with lots of edits.

So, we used the tools we had to ther best advantage and the product came out great. We paid close attention to every detail and mixed to 96kHz 24 bit and did the conversion to 16 bit 44.1 kHz in mastering.
