System: Pentium 233mmx cpu Quantum 4.5 gig Ultra Wide SCSI hdd (A/V optimized) for Wavedata folder only. Generic 4.5 EIDE hdd (for operating sys.) 128 megs of Sdram CW 8.04 Soundcards: Layla & Gina
I posted this topic in the Cakewalk newsgroup but didn't get any replies. I was hoping somone here might have some experince with cakewalk. I'm trying to sync a Tascam 238 analog 8-track deck with cakewalk 8.04 using a PPS-2 synchronizer. When I play back with "Trigger and freewheel" enabled under audio options, the audio slowly begins to drift apart. I tried playing it back with "full chase lock" enabled and it plays completely out of sync. I thougt "full chase lock" was supposed to sync better than "trigger and freewheel"? Cakewalk's manual suggests to let the audio play for about 30 seconds to allow cakewalk to adjust to the external clock but I let the whole song play, which is about 3 1/2 minutes long, and it doesn't work. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.
P.S. I don't record any midi at all,but my hard drive can't handle more than 20 tracks of audio that's why I need to sync the tape deck to it. Besides I could use the extra inputs.

If you check out some of the other sync questions you will see that slaving an analog machine to a DAW is not a good practice. If this is going to be what you are doing a lot of the time, you should look into a synchronizer for the 8 track analog machine. Fostex and Tascam used to make very good, but inexpensive ones. If they are not making them any more, then you might be able to find a used one. I have seen them at pawn shops in Hollywood, so there must be more.
If you must slave the DAW then you are right by selecting "full Chase Lock", but this must also be selected for transfer of the information to the DAW. You can't copy stuff over to the DAW and then lock it up later, it will NEVER work. So, you must make sure the 8 track and the DAW are synced during the recording into the DAW also.
You should start the tape (with timecode on one track) 30 seconds BEFORE the music starts for "full chase lock" to work. :Trigger and Freewheel" is only for DAW synced to a digital machine where word clock is controlling the digital machine (ADAT, DA-88, DAT, etc.) and the DAW. Trigger will NEVER work with an analog machine, it is not supposed to work that way.
As far as the 20 track limit on your hard disk, try two hard disks with 10 tracks on each disk, or get a better SCSI card like the 2940 or 3940 Adaptec, or the Atto. I get 64 tracks off of ONE hard disk with a Mac 9600 300 Mhz. I am using IBM Ultrastor and Seagate Cheetah 10,000 rpm drives.
Hope this helps some
Roger

Thankyou very very much. I have a much better understanding of how sync works now. I'm actually considering switching to Motu 2408 to avoid all of the complications.I know I have to spend some money, which I'm not supposed to do right now, but I think it will be worth it. Again, thanks a bunch.
