I have an 03D, 2 ADAT LX-20's, and a MOTU 2408.

I also am running an outboard micpre, so I have a bit of flexability input-wise (everything doesn't have to go through the 03D).

Does anybody have any feelings about which A/D converter is best OUT OF the 03D, LX-20, and 2408. Also, how about the D/A on these 3?

I know Appoge is best, but I won't be buying 8 channels any time soon. A rosetta wordclock would help, but I still want to pick between these 3 for A/D.

TNX,
Gil

If you had a perfect version of every instrument, then you may be able to pick one perfect mic pre, and use it on everything, but it doesn't work thet way. Mic preamps are meant to compliment the instruments that are recorded. If a GML sounds the best on a guitar that Dean Parks or Walter Becker is playing, that doesn't mean that it will be the best choice for the guitar that you are playing.

It works just like microphones and vocalists. If you have six vocalists they all won't sound the best on the same microphone. One singer may sound the best on a Sony C-800G, while another singer will sound better on a Shure SM-32, or an AKG-414.

There are some exceptions. You can not go wrong by purchasing a GML mic pre or an Avalon, but the prices are up there for the average project studio budget.

The NTI is not necessarily the3 best for every situation as explained above.

For the budget minded, Rane makes excellent mic preamps also. I have used them a lot with excellent results.

The mic pre in the 03D is also very good. It is actually the next generation of the mic pre in the Yamaha PM-4000 (the world's most popular front of house mixing console for live shows). The Steely dan "Alive in America" album was recorded on a Sony 3348 48 track digital machine using the mic pres in the PM-4000.

You sholuld go to an audio dealer that will let you buy a mic pre and try it out. If you are not happy they should let you trade it in on something else. The dealers want your continued business, so they will gladly keep you happy.

I will bet that the converters in the MOTU, the 03D and the ADAT are the same. If they are not the exact same converter, the are so close that I bet you can not measure or hear the difference.
