Dear Roger,
I really appreciate what you're doing. I've learned a lot already. I'm putting together a new DAW for a recording project coming up in the near future. My question goes back to the Mac vs. PC issue, but I would like to hear any comments about the newest technologies in each area. Specifically, has anyone done pro level recording on an AMD Athlon based system? I see Athlon as a way to get more power for the price out of a PC. Are there any issues with this processor that may make it a poor choice for recording? Or a better choice? Secondly, how will this system compete with a Mac G4? I'm very interested in the processing power for EQ, dynamics, etc. from each system.

Specifically:

Athlon 650 Mhz, 256MB RAM, Ultra160 SCSI 10000 rpm 18.2GB for audio, MOTU 24i, Cubase VST

vs.

Mac G4 350 Mhz, 256 MB RAM, Ultra DMA/66 20GB for audio, MOTU 24i, Digital Performer

I'm planning to run 24 tracks @ 16/48

thanks for any info or suggestions

I think you probably have a good comparison going between the PC and MAC. The 350mHz mac sould be a little more powerful than the 650 mHz pc, but it is close. If they are the same price, then the deciding factor would be the software and hardware that you want to use. Sometimes the choices are the amount of money you have to spend, or maybe because you want to be compatible with your friends computer.

Keep in mind that even though some hardware may say that it will work with either platform, it may not work on both Mac and PC NOW. The other processor will be "SUPORTED SOON"

A couple of years ago I would have said "MAC" with no other choice. But now, there are more and more hard disk recording applications that are designed to run well on the pc.

My personal choice is Mac for audio, but my first digital recording setup was PC.

Hope this doesn't confuse you more...

Roger
