We just updated our Pro Tools system to version 5. While the dragable time compression feature is nice (though it would be nice to see what percent change is happening), there are some things that were changed that, in my mind, *didn't* need to be changed. For instance, most of the editing commands have been changed. This new configuration involves a lot more hand movement around the keyboard. Also, to close a session, instead of the mac command (command+W), it is now shift+command+W. Why?
One other thing, the scrubbing function seems to be weighted. It is now more difficult to scrub to an exact location without all that back and forth motion.
It seems as though the system was altered by people who would never have to use the system, with little regard for those who do.
I have looked, without success, for newgroups or some other forum to get reactions from other Pro Tools 5 users. This seems like the perfect place to ask the question. Are my misgivings about this version unreasonable? How do you like version 5?
Cheers,

Yes they have changed lots of commands. Most peaople I have talked to don't like them, but I understand that in order to add more keyboard shortcuts they had to re-arrange the command structure.
I for one am glad that they changes the close session command. There have been times when I am performing a lot of shortcuts and while holding down command have hit the W accidentally. Luckily PROTools asks me if I want to save first an I can cancel. But I can see your point.
I like a lot of features about v5.0, but there are still some things they have to work on. The choice was to get it out so people could start useing the new feature and give feedback, or delay forever the 5.0 release until everything was perfect.
There are a lot of features and fixes that I have been asking for for years that still haven't found their way in to the pile.
I have just been using 5.0 for a few weeks. I was finishing a project that was in 4.32 and I didn't want to change until I was done.
I am going to be using it full time on a mix to film next week, with 56 tracks of audio for a 5.1 surround mix. If that doesn't put it to the test, then I don't know what will.
I'll keep you posted
thanks

I've used version 5 on some stuff that I started in 4.3.2. The only strange thing that I noticed was that it would see the 4.3.2 session as using more inputs or busses than available in version 5 (which wasn't the case. Our I/O didn't change at all.). The offending assignment automatically became buss 32. Fortunately, it had no impact on the work at hand. We checked our I/O configuration and concluded that we had, perhaps, found a bug.
What plug-ins are you using to facilitate your 5.1 mix in Pro Tools?
