Dear Mr. Nichols, my questions are the same: 1-Working with ADAT XT at 48Khz/16bit when I tranfer to PT24 can I use a session at 24bit or there are any problems and what are the benefits? 2-I would like to buy 3 new ADAT XT20 at what bit rate must I do work with PT24. I know that I can set on XT20 the output bit rate at 20bit - 16bit/no dither or 16bit with dither. How must I prefer to transfer to PT24? 3-With Finalizer Plus I can set the output bit rate to varius settings. If I want to go to Dat or CD recorder must I set to 16bit or can I set to other settings? Are there any differences on sound? 4-If I work on PT24 with the 16bit defoult mixer and than mix out to Finalizer set at 24bit, make a safe mix copy to Tascam DA 45 HR at 24bit, than I return to BIAS PEAK for editing and with WAVES L1+ change the bit rate to 16 bit can I make a better sound? Thanks a lot. Stefano Amerio

1) If you are working any 16 bit audio you can transfer to PT24. The lower bits are set to zero and there is no change in the quality of the audio.
Benefits:This allows you to use both 24 bit and 16 bit sound files in the same session. Any changes to the audio files done with audio suite or TDM plug-ins will result in 24 bit results. There is a more in depth explaination which I will save for later.
2)If you are going to use ProTools in 24 bit mode, then you should use the XT20 ADATs in 20 bit mode. I have 6 M20 ADATs that I use in 20 bit mode and transfer to PT24 and it works great.
3) Finalizer plus or any form of processing should be set properly for the destination resolution. If you are using the Finalizer as the last stage before final mixes on a 16 bit DAT machine, then set the Finakizer to 16 bits with "S" dithering. See below about differences in sound.
4) Always use the 24 bit mixer in Pro Tools. The 24 bit mixer is for more than 24 bit audio files. When you use the 24 bit mixer, there is more headroom available for the mixing of large number of tracks. If you have your ProTools set for 64 voices and you have more than 24 tracks of audio playing back at once, then you should use the 24 bit mixer.
The Waves L1 is used for about the same reason as the finalizer. You should never use that kind of processing twice. You should listen to what the finalizer does, and listen to what the L1 does, and decide which you like for your mixes.
Editing does not effect the sound quality or the bit resolution. It doesn't matter if you go to 16 bits and edit, or edit and then go to 16 bits.
It would be a good idea to set the finalizer to 24 bits and print the mix to the 24 bit DAT machine as a backup, or you could print your mixes to 24 bit DAT and then use the finalizer with all of the processing (limiter, expander, compressor, maximizer, etc.) turned off and just use the output to change the bits to 16 for the CD creator.
SOUND QUALITY: As always, the best way to decide what sounds better is to use your ears. Even though theoretically, 24 bits are better than 16 bits, there is always the possibility that some device or step in the chain may be defective. Always listen, and make your final decision. If you listen to something and it sounds the same 16 bits and 24 bits, then there is no reason to record it 24 bits. If you are recording a bunch of synthesizers and drum machines that are 16 bit devices, it won't make the sound any better by recording at 24 bits. It will just be a waste of space.
Hope this helps
Roger Nichols
