Hi Roger, I'm glad to see that you have started a forum here and I have to say that I'm a huge fan of yours, especially with all the work you've done with Steely Dan. I read in one of your editorials where the problem with Hard Disk Recording is indeed the question of backup. It is definitely a question that I have been struggling with as well. I believe that I may have an answer though. Here is a suggestion.
Outfit your computer with a carry out rack bay. You can then just buy a new hard drive and back up all your audio files to a hard drive. Since the prices of hard drives have and are falling, I don't believe most clients would wince if you told them that their storage costs are around $120.00 for a 13 Gig drive. More than enough space for most clients. Just think of it... You've just finished with a client and you need to set up for the next session. You quickly transfer that clients files to the removable hard drive, you then delete all files on the main audio drive, defrag, and then get the other clients removable drive and load those files up. You should still have time to get a drink and brush your teeth.. :-) Anyway, it is just a suggestion.. Until, of course we get that backup machine that is like 20Gig and has an access time of under 4ms... Hmmmmmm

That is a good idea, and a lot of mastering facilities do just that. I usually back up to CD-R so that the data is more permanent. I have had hard disks that after sitting around for a couple of years, develope bad spindle bearings and I can't get the data off. CD-R is easier now that blanks cost less than one dollar US, and some new fast drives like the 12x and 20x Smart & Friendly CD-R recorders. At 20x it only takes three minutes to back up 650 megabytes.

What is your opinion, or experience with using DVD as a backup medium? What is your feel for the safety and retention of this particular media? Thanks for your earlier reply.

DVD-R for backup is just fine. Much more storage and fast transfer rates. The only drawback is the price of the blank disks. $50 is kind of high when the same amount of storage on CD-R would cost about $8. I know it takes more CDs bu they are cheaper. I personally lean in your direction and go for the most advanced coolest stuff, even if it is more money. I still have my $5000 Yamaha CDR-100 CD-R burner. Why wait until they are less than $200?
