I ran into a friend of mine who moved to Seattle, but is visiting back here in Des Moines for a few days. When he lived in Des Moines he worked in a Musical Instrument store.
My friend played bass in a rock/pop band and played fretless bass in a jazz trio(I think this is where he really shined). He told me now he's more into recording and playing keyboards.
What are some cool musical instrument stores in Seattle? Especialy for effects. Boutique effects in particular. Are there any boutique effect manufacturers based in Seattle?
I found one based in Portland called Prescription Electronics. Known for "The Experience" fuzz box. http://www.fuzzbox.com/ It would be cool if these are available in Seattle.
Also, say anything else about Seattle you would like to mention(coffee shops, bars, whatever). And he technicaly lives on the east bay(he mentioned Bellevue) but I think he gets around the whole metro area.
Thanks in advance!

Not to derail your thread, Franky...I just happened to read a thing on Yahoo, reprinted from Forbes, I believe, that rated Seattle as the most overpriced American city to live in. Others were fairly predictable on the west coast...surprisingly (to me at least) a lot of the east coast overpriced cities were in New Jersey. The central US was represented by Chicago and Denver.
I have a cousin in Ski-daddle.

Franky, For suggestions on places to visit in Seattle, check this post
As for music shops, Guitarville is a good one if you can make it up that way. That's where I scored an original, unmolested Hiwatt DR103 for $800
Enjoy your trip up this way, it's a different world than Iowa. My friends, wife, bro-in-law, and I all moved here from Illinois. It was a bit of culture shock for them (I'm from Vancouver, BC originally - you've got to check it out as well if you have the time).
One thing to keep in mind while your here: If you're used to big cities, Seattle isn't one of them. Things are a bit more laid-back here, so, for example, when you're driving don't expect the maniacal "gotta get there at any cost" attitude from most other drivers. We tend to enjoy the journey more here. Maybe because we're taking in the scenery?
Anyway, have fun, and enjoy the experience. There are a million things to do, especially if you love the outdoors.

I'm in Seattle right now, visiting some in-laws. You ain't kidding about the overpriced--and I'm from New York, so I know a little about that.
They sold a very modest, small houe in the homey little Ballard neighborhood for 500k. I'm talking a completely unremarkable 2 or 3 bedroom house on less than .3 acres. They're still in Ballard, in a much nicer house but still nothing you call affluent. I won't even ask how much they paid for this place.
Well, I'm enjoying it as a guest, but you can cross Seattle of my might-live-there list. To bad. It's a beautiful and happening place.

Thses people don't know anything about driving, especially in the rain or the rare snow. I like taking my time(doing the speed limit) to get there and get tail-gated so close I can't see the car behinds headlights. Affordable housing can be had, you just have to settle for no view. On the other hand, when shopping for gear, hit the pawn shops. Pawn Exchange is a pretty good chained outlet with computerized inventory, and they warranty what they sale. Slowly

Slowly Don't get me wrong, there are the occasional asshats that choose not to believe they share this world with anyone else. At least on this side of the pond (Redmond/Issaquah), the majority of people are courteous.
As for housing prices, there are properties west of Market in Kirkland that will sell for upwards of 1 mil. That's for a two bedroom shack. No kidding. Would you pay $1.2 million for this place ? Same as NY, over a mil for a old, crappy, narrow, no-land brownstone. I guess if the market will bear it... No thanks, not for me, not worth it one bit.

Housing prices'r KRAZY! But no reason to be under the illusion that Seattle is as bad yet housing price wise as LA, NY, or SF.
If you have an income that will be the same no matter what city you're in, then Seattle isn't as expensive to live in as those other top dawgs.
The Forbes report took into account average pay scale, etc. for their fuzzy math / statistic bending calculations.

I caught on quick in L.A.(Anaheim). Took the brake pedal and threw it out the window! Didn't need it! Slowly

Thanks guys! It's great to get so many replies in just one day. BTW I'm not moving to Seattle, I have friend named Ben who has lived there for about a year(I think?) and is visiting friends and family in Des Moines for a few days right now. So I'll pass on the info to him.
My friend Ben told me he has a pretty cheap living situation because he has a bunch of roommates (who are also in his band). Which seems to be a common thing in expensive cities. If you're young and hip, you have to share in order to cut the living expenses down to size(I live in Des Moines, Iowa and pay $410 a month for a studio. It's small but at least I don't have to share).
Ben told me that Seattle is pretty laid back. And it doesn't seem like a really big city. It sounds manageable and easy to live in(even if it is expensive).
An interesting thing I read about Seattle in the New York Times is that Seattle has one of the lowest percentages of families in the city(probably because of the expense). I think Seattle is tied with San Francisco, with Portland in 3rd place. If you're single, maybe that can be a good thing. Then the city has a lot of attractions that are geared to singles rather than families. Even in little things, I’ve heard that grocery stores in cities like this mainly have individually sized servings of vegetables rather than big family sized servings.
Me, I don't have any plans to move out of Des Moines, Iowa any time soon. I'm just trying to make it here in Des Moines. Des Moines is the kind of place where a lot of young people move away after they graduate from high school or college. But more males move away than females(maybe because females feel a closer attachment to friends and family than guys do). So there are more single females in their 20’s than males in their 20's in Des Moines. Which is a cool thing. But I still need to work up the guts to talk to girls here .
