I'd say these pictures, taken in the past month, speak volumes to what summer is all about! Feel free to post 'em if you got 'em!

Oh, and don't forget the smell of corn. Cornfields have a certain 'earthy' smell to them that i find very pleasant. There is so much cr0n around us that it smells very cr0nny outside.

Can't have summer w/o bbqs, cr0n on the c0b, and watermelon.

Those are classic photos. Thanks! Now if we could just bottle the smell of a freshly cut lawn, and put it in an aerosol...

I hate summers here. Too dang hot. Except at sunset in the Red River valley. It is incredibly peaceful. Total stillness, locusts whining, often hazy, red sunsets and the heat is literally comfortable for the hour before sundown.

Neil:

There is such joy in that first photo that when I saw it I smiled, then giggled, then started laughing out loud...and it felt damn good.

Thanks for sharing...my "good-day feeling" meter is now pegged in the red! \:D

cheers,
Ian

You know, that's exactly why I wanted to share these photos. 'Cause what I'd really be sharing is that feeling!

Keep 'em coming, guys. (And eventually, whether here or at HC, I expect pics of Phil's BBQ. That has to qualify. Good friends, music and great food! Yum!

I'm waiting for my buddy Charlie to email me the disc of pics he took while visiting.

Y'know, Neil, I'd just have to say offhand from seeing those pics of Lilly, she'd do great on a pony. ;\)

How about an Alpaca?

Ted, you don't know how much I'd love to bring her to your farm for a visit. The pony, alone, would keep her busy the entire time! ;\)

BTW - I don't know if you saw the post when you mentioned Preston's pony, but we missed our chance to go to an auction after a gentleman who brought ponies to birthday parties and fairs around Nashville died. He (and the ponies) lived a 1/4 mile from us but we forgot to attend the auction. \:\(

I get a kick out of that pose...she looks as if she's telling you she's NOT going to eat her broccoli. \:D

Sorry you missed the auction...but, I'm sure there'll be others... \:D

That was her, "I don't need no steen-king carousel!" look while riding one of the ponies owned by the gentlemen who died, in a strip-mall parking lot.

I already have a relatively large shed that could be converted to an one-room stable for a pony. ;\)

Are you zoned in a pony-friendly area?

I don't know for certain. But a house down the street keeps goats and, as mentioned, the pony farm was in our neighborhood. They may have had different zoning, however, as this residential neighborhood is bordered, on the north, by a small expanse of open land. Some belonging to the former, pony owning family. Some is the backside of industrial (Peterbuilt Trucks) and commercial properties between us and a major commercial district that culminates in Rivergate Mall. That area is a large triangle between two main roads.

So that may account for their ability to keep the ponies, but maybe not.

Yeah...you might want to check on that.

I'm learning, little by little, about stuff like this. I'm sure there are others more qualified...but...

You can't feed ponies too much. According to my next door neighbor (a bonafide horse-rahdin', cow ropin' cowboy)...they'll founder (bloat up like a tick on a houn'dawg) if left out to pasture too long. A little food goes a long way. Also, ponies can be a bit stubborn and cantankerous. Einstein has his moments. When Preston's in the saddle, we make sure we've got (especially since he's only three) one hand on the pony lead and someone steadying Preston in the saddle...ready to grab him off if Einstein gets too frisky.

Well, Boosh, are you zoned in a pony-friendly area? \:D HAHAHAHA...

Here in the states, there are zoning laws. I'm sure there are similar things in the Netherlands...bits of property set up only for commercial use, residential use, etc. Within a lot of city limits you can't have livestock, unless you're either rural or semi-rural...or the city, county, township, whatever, can either fine you or tell you you have to get rid of the farm animals. What I was asking Neil is whether he's in an area where zoning ordinances permit farm animals. \:D

Thanks, dman. Coming your way, next weekend. Don't know if we're staying in Lake Villa yet. (My brother's in Buffalo Grove, about an hour from the Rte 12, IL/WI border.

Boosh, Are you in a pony-friendly area?

(Sorry, I know Ted already asked, but every pair of pants you own is at risk now. \:D

(We're a nasty bunch, aren't we? ;\) )
