So...
I spent the last couple days with my 6.5 year old in the hospital.
My ex spouse is diabetic, diagnosed at age 7. My 14 year old is diabetic, diagnosed at age 7. Now, my littel one is too. After weeks of tons of urination, drinking, etc, after he spent 4 days with mom, I worked up the nerve to check his blood sugars. 489 mg.
Long story short, we are home, he is on insulin and blood tests for the rest of his life.
I do not know how to feel, what to think, etc.
Fucking HELL.
My boys are the meaning of my life. I well with pride and worry for them. Now, daily, shots, finger pokes, dietary needs. Limits. Is it ok to be goddam mad?

It is perfectly okay. In fact you need to take some time by yourself to let out that anger and disappointment. You will need to be strong for your little ones and that will be compromised if you let these emotions fester inside of you.
I wish that there were something I could say that would help. But words won't change the reality for you and your family.
If it can be of any comfort to you, know that I will offer up prayers on your behalf on on behalf of your loved ones.
Sincerest regards to you, Dan

Well, it really isn't too bad. Think of the pancreas as an automatic, but he got a manual. You seem to have enough experience. It is something no one wants.
As for the food, it's just that crap food should be avoided. It makes sense for anybody, really. He just needs to be a man about this one thing a bit earlier. The 13 year old can help greatly with this (kind of peer comraderie). Let him be a big brother. You'll love watching it.
Things are moving very fast for diabetes. Both of them will have some welcome advances soon.

My sympathies deanmass, but as Prague says, there are big things afoot in the world of type 1 diabetes "cures". I'm actually fairly heavily invested in a couple of small medical companies that may have the answer....replacement pancreatic islet cells wrapped so they can make/pass insulin but not be recognized as foreign cells (and hence killed off) by the body's defense mechanisms. Their goal is to give one or two jabs to each "victim" a year for a complete self-regulating cure. I believe they'll be moving to human trials within the next couple of years. Keep your fingers crossed.
I have type 2 myself and need insulin for it (the pills just didn't work for me - I guess I'm too insulin resistant). I just changed to mixing (mixing - hey, there's the music link!!) N/R insulin myself today as it happens.
Good luck.

Nutrition is very central. What kind of diet do your sons and ex-wife follow?

My ex really does not follow a diet, but she is on an insulin pump. My eldest is on carb counting, but not under that tight of control. N insulin in the AM, N at dinner, H throughout as needed per carbs/food intake.
My youngest is on carb counting as well, but, he is a real meat eater, which my eldest was not, so he is probably going to have an easier time with the diet portion (i.e. easier to eat when eating meat with no carb=no shots unless abouve 200).

Speaking from experience (I've been insulin dependant for decades) once yhou and your child get an understanding of their bodies needs for insulin based on a0 the physical activity level of the day and b0 what they eat., controlling blood sugars is a relatively easy chore. A good diet, proper exercise, and moderation, combined with a good diabetic educator can make living with diabetes fairly painless.
In addition, your children will see a cure before they reach adulthood. Several studies, including one at the University of BC, are in fial development of t cell and stem cell implants that will cure diabetes. At the U of BC, they are finishing up a 2 yr study inwhich 20 insulin dependant individuals were given t cell injections, and all ahve been insulin free and running normal glucose levels for the duration of the study.
Ask your childrens educator and PCP about switching from N to Humalog and Ultralente. that's been my regiment for several years, and it is fantastic. Humalog is much quicker acting than N thus keeping the meal spikes in check, and Ultralente also is a much less spiked, even distributing long term.
Best of luck.
