I was there for the Lennon exhibit a few years ago and really enjoyed it. The museum is full of some very cool stuff and the Lennon exhibit was extremely moving. I don't have much to recommend other than you may want to take some time and explore Cleveland. I was pleasantly surprised at what a nice city it is.

Although the idea of having a Hall of Fame for rock and roll might sound odd, I went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year and I think it was amazing.

Make sure to see the Jimi Hendrix collection. I think the most amazing things I saw were childhood drawings by Jimi Hendrix and the original hand written lyrics for Purple Haze. The first lyrics Jimi Hendrix wrote for Purple Haze were very different than what was recorded in the final lyrics of the song.

I agree with Paul about exploring Cleveland while you are there. Make sure to go to the Barking Spider Tavern.

I have been to the R&R Hall of Fame twice and think it is a great place to visit.

Last time I was there they had the Quicksilver Messenger Service guitarist's amplification rig in the entry hall--what an interesting combination of "Stuff" cobbled together!
Clonk for photo..

Think about becoming a member--free admission, and you get some pretty cool SWAG to boot.

Mostly tax-deductable.

Cool place. Lots of goosebumps. They have a piece of Otis Redding's plane.

Damn.

*Edit* - I was corrected down below - Apparently you can purchase memberships at the museum store -

They have a website - http://www.rockhall.com . I was a member for a couple of years when I lived up there.

If you can find the Barking Spider (see post above) it is a cool place to go. Right near the Case Western Reserve University. Also in that neighborhood is the Euclid Tavern - the bar that is featured in the Michael J Fox movie "Light Of Day". Also in the same neighborhood is one of those Peter Gehrity buildings that look like a folded silver ribbon, and the very nice Cleveland Art Museum. And there is always lots of live music in downtown Cleveland...

I am proud to say that I played at both the Spider and the Euclid Tavern when I lived up there - I also played a job in that fancy building.

If you have an interest in the history of rock music the R&R HOF is a fascinating place. Props, guitars, costumes, handwritten lyrics, it is definitely worth the trip.

Sorry, this is not true--I purchased mine at the ticket counter (2003).

I see on the web site you can purchase a membership at the museum store - you may not see anything about it at the ticket counter...

I think I'd be about twenty times more likely to visit the Barking Spider -- and I don't drink. (Anymore.)

The R&R HoF has, from the very beginning, annoyed the heck out of me with its choices for sanctification and its self-justifying "mission" to further ossify an already exsanuated* genre.

Like a charity with no actual beneficiaries this self-serving enterprise attempts to drain the few germs of life out of the dead body of rock in order to pump up its own continued, parasitic existence.

Of course, I could have just woke up on the wrong side of bed this morning...

[ADDENDUM: Yes. Definitely. The wrong side of the bed.]

[*or however you spell that... I couldn't find a correct spelling to save my life]

I visited another sort of former Rock 'n' Roll hall of fame on Sunset Blvd. last night after watching "Mayer of the Sunset Strip". I spotted Ken's Karate and hopped out to stand in front of the place for a few minutes and I even peaked inside of what was once Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco that was in operation durring my pimply high school years '72 thru '75. I was trying to picture all the Rock 'n' Roll royalty like Zep, the Who, Bowie amongst others that cavorted through the door. Its a very small room, did anybody venture in there durring its heyday?

Some really nice artifacts are there, but overall I felt a bit like I was walking through a VH1 special. Sorry, but that's how I felt. Still, if I read my own post before I went, I'd probably go anyway just to have the experience.

Best,
--JES
