Tom Waits.

God I love Tom Waits. I never picked up the CD's after the big vinyl exodus. Rains Dogs, Swordfishtrombone, Frank's Wild Years. You guys hear me?

Well, I picked up TOM WAITS BEAUTIFUL MALADIES The Island Years. 23 mind bending, soul wrenching, Bukowski meets My Favorite Martian songs. God I'm in heaven.

Well she said she'd stick around
Until the bandages came off
But these mama boys
Just don't know when to quit

And Matilda asks the sailors
Are those dreams or are they prayers
So just close you eyes, son
And this won't hurt a bit

And it's time time time
And it's time time time
And it's time time time
that you love
And it's time time time

I don't know what that means but when he sings it...

Some songs are so moving. I put a cassette together for a friend of mine, who used to be a submariner in the navy. It had Al Stewart's "Life In Dark Water"... OOPS! I didn't know he lost his first wife to his best friend, like the song said. The lyrics hit way too close to home.

I bought this "best of" because I'm working with a band that could use some of those instrumental elements mentioned in my title... but what started as an idea kickstarter, ended as a full on re-immersion into the underworld of TM.

Hang on St. Christopher, with a barrel house dog
Kick me up Mt. Baldy, throw me out in the fog
Tear a hole through the jack pot, drive a stake through his heart
Do a 100 on the Grapevine, do a jump on the start
Hang on St. Christopher, now don't let me go
Get me to Reno, and bring it in low, yeah

Yes, dropping acid while listening to some crazy guy sing about doing 100 over the grapevine sounds fun...

...it was Black Label beer or cheaper for me then.

Don't miss "Mule Variations" One of my favorite cuts on that CD is Chocolate Jesus, complete with roosters crowing throughout. Tom does have a way of making you re-evaluate how music is recorded...

That's perfect! Yes he does. I just went to the hardware store a got and couple pieces of 4" pvc piping for vocal fx. I'm looking for an old brake drum. The big empty water bottles here at work sound huge and woody when lightly tapped...

(Did I just use the words "huge" and "woody" in the same sentence?)

Did it splash out of the cup and burn your shins, leaving scars or something?

My dad has a pile of Tom Waits. I don't remember which story it is (maybe Phantom 49?) where he mentions "the coffee was too weak to defend itself".... i love that line.

Gawd how that is so true so often in truck stops.

With all this "new" stuff coming out by hot new bands like the White Stripes, The Strokes and The Black Keys, it's nice that somebody has taken the time to give a nod to the Godfather of lo-fi.

At first listen, I thought Tom Wait's records were just very poorly recorded... Then it dawned on me. The recordings were perfect, he just used different textures to achieve EXACTLY the sound he was going for.

I can hardly wait to hear Lee's hardware store/used auto parts inspired recordings. It might give me a huge woody... lol
