I just watched Star Trek "Generations", last night. His last "Scotty" part. Such a great character. He is already missed at this house...

I had the pleasure, along with Dave Bryce, of getting to meet Mr. Doohan. Dave and I were working for Alesis when we put together a special NAMM show presentation with a little movie starring Jimmy Doohan. We also flew Doohan in to be at our Trek-themed NAMM show party that year.

He was about 77 at the time, but he was as lively as anyone there. He was, to be blunt, drunk, and pinching the asses of cute girls. But he was having a grand time, and it was really cool getting to know him a little.

While he never minded being forever typecast as Scotty, he was always miffed that people didn't know he'd faked the Scottish accent (he was Canadian). He considered himself a master of accents, and enjoyed running through a bunch of dialects and boggling our minds while we were making the film.

RIP, Scotty. You were a cool guy.

- Jeff

What a wonderful character to be associated with for over 30 years.

You'll be missed, Scotty. RIP.

I remember, seeing Star Trek The Motion Picture as a kid, and thinking "what the hell happended to Scotty, he's old and fat now"

Now, I'm old and fat, and I understand.

God bless Montgomery Scott, he held that ship together with duct tape!

So sad (this, from a guy who spent more Halloweens as a kid dressed as Mr. Spock than he'd care to admit). Classic Trek is the best - I loved when Scotty told Captain Kirk in The Wrath of Khan that he always told Kirk double the actual amount of time it'd take him to fix something - that way he always appeared amazing when it was done in half the time.

Warp speed, Mr. Doohan.

Maybe he WAS Scottish after all... \:D

Aye, we'll miss ye, Scotty!

Favorite Scotty scene: He's in that bar with the Enterprise crew, and some Klingons come in and diss Captain Kirk. Scotty holds the crew in check, until the Klingons start dissing the Enterprise (instead of the captain), then he throws the first punch. I think it's in the "Tribbles" episode.

I plan on doing a lot of that when I'm 77. In fact, I may not wait that long!

Apparently he has a child who is a year older than my oldest ....Well, at 79, it's nice to know you can still get your ol' feller up for some action!

Sorry to see him go, but he did have a pretty good run.

I enjoyed Trek, and always liked his character on the show and the movies.

Agreed. That cast had a uniquely enjoyable chemistry, and James Doohan was the most charming one of the bunch.

Whether fussing over his beloved spacecraft - "Captain! She can't take any more!" - swigging Romulan ale, beaming crew members from the clutches of danger, fixing the most difficult technical problems in the midst of immediate peril, or crawling a catwalk, wrench and flashlight in hand, Mr. Scott did it with verve and panache. His last word on "The Trouble With Tribbles" is possibly the most enjoyable moment in the history of the series.

So long, James. Millions of fans loved you as Chief Engineer Scott, but more importantly, we thought of you as a friend, as someone who would always be there for us when the chips were down. Thanks for being there for us all these years. Thank you.

While I agree,I also feel the scripts for the movies translated well for sci fi.Sure, there is much more complex and interesting sci fi stories out there but they either didn't make it to the screen or didn't translate as well except in a rare case or 2,or was ruined by Will Smith and a hack screen play. While I enjoyed Star Wars as eye candy I never found it as interesting in the story dept. as either the original series(or any incarnation for that matter, except the last one) or the movies of Star Trek.Anyway, that's just my own opinion. It's also rare that characters such as Scotty in a sci fi develop into society's mindset as well which made the whole thing unique.
Anyway, let's set this thing into warp-drive and may the heavens be with you Scotty/James.

An excerpt from his CNN biography re: his D-Day experience:

Quote:
The Canadians crossed a minefield laid for tanks; the soldiers weren't heavy enough to detonate the bombs. At 11:30 that night, he was machine-gunned, taking six hits: one that took off his middle right finger (he managed to hide the missing finger on screen), four in his leg and one in the chest. The chest bullet was stopped by his silver cigarette case.
Holy crap!

Fitting too, perhaps, that he "waited" to leave us until the moon-landing anniversary.

Even in real life he had a way of escaping by the most narrow of margins.

So....no one freak...

I LOVE scotty, and in fact, consider him one of my all time fave tv characters.

I heard he had died.

I was at the hospital with my youngest son, who was diagnosed as diabetic. Waiting in ER. Thinking about scotty and my son...Laughing...thinking...

Scotty...I ....need.....more...power.....
Cap'tan.....I don't think she cun' 'old out much longa....but...what da fuck do I know....I got alzheimers...

Godspeed, Jimmy....I loved ya...

Incidentally, this is the 2nd time an icon has died while I had someone I loved in the hospital. My sister was hospitalized with 2/3 rd degree burns from a rayon skirt catching fire, and I remember sitting on the edge of her bed in a daze whiel she slept, and seenig that Jim Henson had died. Jsut made me feel weird, ontop of awful
