SO...

my wife takes the exit off a highway.
So does mr. big diesel truck (henceforth, MBDT)
So does Mr. Nobody Else Matters But Me (hecnceforth, IDIOT).

IDIOT decides "Oh, GOSH!! I need to be in that OTHER lane, three lanes over! I'm TOO IMPORTANT TO GO ONE BLOCK NORTH AND TURN AROUND, MY DRINKING BUDDIES/FAMILY/PLANS CAN'T HANDLE THE 1.45 MINUTE DELAY!!!!"
IDIOT proceeds to cut across THREE lanes.
MBDT has to slam on his brakes.
Mrs. offramp ends up introduced to MBDT's unecessarily large towbar and towball.
Mrs. offramps' finely-tuned, perfect health '95 Camry is mangled...hood, bumper, small amount of frame. Radiator is pushed in, but not leaking. YET. (Just wait 'til winter.)

End of an era, and our pocketbook.

Somehwere, there's a self-centered, cocksucking idiot motherfucker blue-grey minivan driving genetic drift asshole, having a nice, quiet (or noisy) evening with his family or drinking buddies completely unaware of the long-term effect his self-centered egocentric decision had on a few other people and their pocketbooks.

Human beings SUCK. End of story.

Yes, I am PISSED. ROYALLY.

PEOPLE: PAY ATTENTION TO EVERY BIT OF YOUR ENVIRONMENT AND HOW YOU AFFECT IT. EXPECT TO FIND ANGRY PEOPLE ON THE OTHER END OF YOUR SELFISH DECISIONS.

No, the airbags didn't go off, and yes, she is safe and downstairs with medication. That doesn't change the fact that OTHER PEOPLE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN ACTIONS AND NEED TO THINK BEYOND THREE FEET OUTSIDE OF THEIR SPACE.

This wouldn't have happened if someone else had had a LITTLE humility.

You have every right to be angry. You are 100% correct that people need to understand that these types of selfish choices can cause damage to others. It's unfortunate that many people don't understand the possible implications to others.

I'm glad to hear Mrs. Offramp is doing well.

Our time together is so short. Appreciate every moment. It could have had a much worse end, and I'm certainly glad you're here being angry instead of telling us a much worse story.

I don't think that all humans are reckless and selfish, though. I live in a state known for aggressive driving, and I'm guessing that fewer than one person in four- or five-hundred would have done what Mr. Minivan did.

I'm really sorry to hear about the damage to the Camry, but I'm ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED to hear about the LACK OF DAMAGE to Mrs. Offramp. Keep what matters in mind. Your wife escaped a trip to the orthopaedics ward. Or the burn ward. Or worse.

Sorry about the rough day. Keep your chin up. Tomorrow is right around the corner.

Bummer, dude. Bummer. Into every life a little rain must etc... but the primary consolation is, everyone's health is okay. You can fix cars and/or buy new/old ones.

But you can't always fix people.

I don't blame you for being royally pissed -- in the slightest.

But there's a big consolation there, and I hope you'll find yourself taking some comfort in it.

OTOH, considering what might easily have happened is just gonna make you more pissed off, if you're anything like me...

Well... burn through it and then get on with life.

Good luck!

So, Mrs. Offramp was on an offramp?

Good thing she's ok.

The car is driveable, yes? Ugly, but still in proper working condition? Take note of the fact that you don't *have* to spend any money on it right now. Could be worse.

If the radiator was going to leak, it'd do it right now in the summer where it's got the most heat to build pressure.

Hang in there bud.... I know times are hard and you don't need this, but keep pluggin' away and keep envisioning a place in the not to distant future where stuff starts falling back into place for you.

You know those occasions where you think, "where's a cop when you need one".
Well 2 weeks ago karma came home to a guy here.
He was driving down the road, acting like a dick.
He started harrassing one car, because the person passed him.
He got in front of him, and started to drive really slow, forcign the othe rcar to slow down as well. Untill he came to a full stop, and got out, walked to the other car and started harrassing the driver.
The other driver was a cop in an unmarked police car, and dickwad was hauled off to jail.

In the words of the little shrimp from a sharks tale "true story".

Offramp,

At least The Fine Young Lady is ok.

..and I'd recommend an aluminum softball bat. It makes a much more comforting 'DUNK' sound when it comes in contact with a skull...

...Louisville Sluggers are the preferred bats for windshields, headlights, doorframes, hoods and roofs.

Is it possible that the MBDT driver caught any kind of license plate number? If so, get thee to the Sporting Goods store for said bats.

peace,
Tim from Jersey

Hey Ramp, glad your wife is ok- sorry to hear about your car.

Did your wife get a ticket? In lots of states, the person who hits someone from behind usually gets a ticket and for insurance is "at fault" for tailgaiting.

Seriously, though, did he have insurance? Were the cops called? Is the car considered totalled?

Geez offramp... that just sucks. Yeah, of course the important thing is that your wife is OK, but you know that, and that doesn't change the fact that this buttmunch just thinks he can take other people's lives into his own hands over a moment's inconvenience.

I REALLY hope you find this piece of scum somehow and figure out a way to make him pay. Maybe you can put an ad somewhere to see if anyone witnessed it, if your wife didn't get the license number?

Sorry to hear that. \:\( I know what a pain in the ass it is to have a very reliable old car trashed, too... an older well maintained car has a value way beyond anything that you'd get for it from the insurance company.

Sounds like your country, as does mine, needs to start making people take some sort of 'driving test' to make sure they are fit to be behind the wheel. Over here what happens is someone takes us out for a nice leisurely drive where they chack that they can turn the key in ignition and if so, hands them a shiny new drivers license!

Least it seems that way, the number of complete f&*kwits on the road!!!!!!!!!!!

You have my sympathy, and pass my best onto Mrs Offramp! Rest assured that IDIOT's driving career will end with him being a splatmark on the road. Unfortunately the bastard will probably take severl innocent people with him!!!!

Not to be insensitive, but only because this happened to my wife too, she didn't get a ticket for following the truck too close did she? Please understand I'm not insinuating she is responsible, I'm just familiar how the cops work around here. The person in back is "always" at fault.

At any rate, get used to driving for a while. My wife was understandably skiddish about getting back on the road for a few months. Hope she's feeling better....

Shniggens, it won't take much to total a 95 Camry, especially with even the least bit of frame damage.

No cops. MBDT didn't have any damage, and told my wife he was okay with not reporting if she was. It would have been some points on a license and a rise in premiums. IDIOT sails off into the afternoon sun, blissfully unaware of anything beyond his nose.
So...we are stuck holding all the expenses.

Car is probably totalled. '95 Camry...would need a hood, grille, certainly some of those mystery parts that you can't figure out exactly what they do but can't repair the car without them, and eventually a radiator. Will need the top frame rail of the front frame pulled back out. I can do most all of that work myself, but the issue would be finding the damned parts to begin with. Not like the parts needed would be in high supply, as they're the most likely to be munched in any accident.

Bitch of it is, this car is one of the most dependable, mechanically sound, and overall solid vehicles I have ever encountered, with occasional bouts of over 500 miles to the tank. It is quiet and smooth, with a rock-solid engine and tranny. I'm having a difficult time accepting any judgement of "totalled". This is not something you just throw away, y'know?

Sorry to hear of this- glads Ms. off is OK.

I can relate.

A few weeks ago some lowlife idiot driving a large dumptruck filled wiht large stones was driving in front of me on the expressway.
He hits a bump and a SHOWER of large stones come tumbling out of the back of the truck, bounce off the pavement and ping my volvo wagon like a hundred pieces of shrapnel.
I slam on my brakes (glad no one was tailing me too close behind me) and lose thre dude off the next exit as he passed through a traffic signal before I could.

It turns out that a shattered headlamp asembly was the worst of it. 266 bucks to replace ( Volveo parts are a rip off - and this was 100 buck less than the official Volvo original part)

Police run down his ID for me based on the license plate that I managed to write down.
We exchange a few phone calls /messages - but in the end he refused to provide his insurance info.
I just finished filling our a form to take him to small claims court. ASSHOLE.

Offramp, unfortunately, i understand the law is really clear that, if you rear-end someone else, you are at fault- period. Fact is we all need to be prepared to stop at a moment notice without colliding with the vehicle in front of us.

To your point abaout being aware of your environment: Perhaps i should have stayed further back from this truck ( I will in the future)- perhaps you should have been further behind the vehicle you collided with.

Fortunately, this too shall pass.
Maybe its a good time to write an angry song.

Hendmik, she was at least one car length away from the truck...that's how suddenly the truck had to stop.
And while I'm not quite clear on it, as my wife was in tears the whole time, he also--in the process of avoiding IDIOT--had to move into her lane. So, there's something to consider, there, although I'm sure we'd get fucked anyway.
I'll get a better read on it later, when she's calmed down.
She's driving the Camry to work today. Fortunately, we only live about four miles from her job. The hood is still latched, and you can be damned sure I'm not touching it yet.

I've already checked out used Camrys in the News this morning. Not bad pricing, really, for something about the same vintage. Really solid cars, and I'll barely hesitate to buy another one.

Kendrix, writing an angry song would be a waste of time, right now. If it got airplay, it'd be nothing but a steady 2-4 groove with a bassline and one solid bleep.

Offramp,

Check out http://www.pullnsave.com/ . It's off of Peoria and I-70. You pull the parts yourself, but like the name says, you save money doing it that way. LOTS of cars at that lot.

They have a set price for each item. According to their website, $32.99 for a radiator.

If you go, make sure you lock your car up tight. Thieves have been known to browse the parking lot instead of the junk lot.
