I let my friend use my studio and he has rented a lot of gear from from me for his studio. I am very troubled as I accidently saw his sample drive. All my samples for (50 GB) were on his drive organized they way mine were. I spent thousands of dollars on my sample library with all the origianl CD's as back up. Plus all the effort organizing them too. He got them for free. I don't have the nerve to say anything to him. I am pissed!

What a dick. I'm sorry, but if he's stealing your licensed software, then he's putting YOU at legal risk of getting penalized if he's somehow caught. You shouldn't feel bad for putting the smack down on him for this.

Yup, immediately reformat his drive, a few times, so there's no chace of recovery. then kick him to the curb, informing him the next time he'll be prosecuted.

You need to confront him, as much as you don't want to do this.
As a friend, you should give him the benefit of the doubt. It could be that he's of the mindset that "it's just software", which is a ridiculous error some people make.
But the main thing you need to tell him is that you paid a LOT of money for this stuff, and you don't think it's fair to you for him to take the samples without even asking your permission. Moreover, you need to let him know that both of you could get in trouble for the supposed "sharing" of these files.
If he responds in a dick-like way, he's not your friend. if he apologizes and claims that he didn't realize this was a big deal, then you can preserve the friendship.
Just my thoughts... your mileage may vary.

You seem "calmed" since it seems you are also thinking "it's only software".
Now ... what if you found your mixer or hardware synths at his house? Maybe your car? Well, it's the same thing. It's stealing. Period.
Just like the Weasel said:

... and "accidentally" delete his Hard drive.

I would confront him. Why don't you "have the nerve?" He certainly had a LOT of nerve to steal everything from you. I'd tell him he needs to pony over the copies or you will call the MFG and report his worthless ass. Oh, and if you haven't figured it out yet, he's NOT your friend.

What his friend did isn't right, but it's not the same thing as your example. If his hardware synth or car was stolen, that would deprive him of the use of those items. He still has the samples on his hard drive that he is able to use, even though his friend made a copy.

This is a no brainer.
Delete the hard disk.
First he steals your samples, then he steals your tunes, next thing you know your studio gets robbed.
Anyone who is smart enough to copy your samples is smart enough to know right from wrong. This dude is not your friend.

Screw that . . . beat his ass and call it even.
If he gets upset, then he's not a true friend.

I would suggest not deleting the files yourself without your friend's permission as that seem criminal to me in itself. I do suggest confronting him to get those files deleted. If he doesn't comply, I would stop loaning him any gear (software or hardware). $.02

Inform whatever authority takes care of this over there, then tell your friend that you believe your files have been accessed and may have been illegally obtained by someone but you aren't sure who and the authorities may routinely check up on him as they will all who have used your studio, but not to worry since obviously he would never do anything like that so he'll be clean.
Either he'll panic and wipe the lot or will be prosecuted with no recourse towards you, you're just protecting your interests and acting responsibly...

If the guy was a friend, why didn't he just ask for a copy of the sample drive? Seems like a friend wouldn't be doing sneaky shit behind your back...ya know?

Friends who steel from friends have a problem. I'm not saying that to be funny. Some people will do anything for you, then slip $10 out of your billfold if you leave it laying around. Just be careful.

Here's a question...
Are you absolutely sure he stole your library, and didn't purchase it himself and just organized it similarly? Is this is at all a possibility?
How do you deduce he transferred those 50GB? That'd take an awfully long time to transfer no matter what medium you use (Internet, flash drive, CD, etc...) I transfer 4GB of data over the net every other week, and it takes about 8 hours on a 7 meg cable connection.
I'm not saying your friend is innocent, but I am saying he may not be guilty.

I would just tell him to ask next me he wants to "borrow' a sample, and leave it at that.
I'm sorry, but a friend is worth more than some soundfiles. But that's just me.
