... haven't even had time to download Firefox. Sheesh. A window pops up, something like...

MESSAGE from MSOFT UPDATE
to Customers on (date time)
Important notice from MSOFT
Buffer overflow in Messenger Service cuases unexpected computer shutdown, virus infection and remote code execution

Affected software:
NT, 2000, XP, Win98
Non affected:
ME

Your system is infected, download the patch from below. First type URL into browser, then click OK.

Seems I recall... uh, is this spyware or something? Crap, where'd this come from? I just installed the friggin' XP like one hour ago.

BTW, I disconnected from the dial-up earlier... went outside awhile, came back and the screen was blank and I could not resurrect it. That was odd. Rebooted and all was well.

This is after trying for three days to get Linus Mepis going. I finally gave up. I actually finally did get it installed but my Fostex won't work with it, so, screw it. Now, to XP. And this.

Is the "message" above legit or spyware? I disabled Messenger but do I have to edit Registry? I don't know if I've ever edited registry. Damn, it just popped up again.

It's probably just a pop-up. What I'd recommend doing is if your system doesn't have SP2 installed to update your XP CD with SP2 built-in and then reinstall Windows with the applied Service Pack. Do a google search on XP Service Pack 2 slipstreaming for more info. This way, at least you will have some protection before installing an Antivirus app and a real firewall like ZoneAlarm. BTW, an unpatched XP system hooked up via broadband without a firewall will usually get knocked over within 15 minutes these days .

DO NOT CLICK THE POPUP. Get a popup blocker installed ASAP. I use the google one.

I'd research that thoroughly.... MSOFT?? Any/all Microsoft updates come from microsoft.com, and can be verified there. If this MSOFT thing cannot be verified, it's clearly spyware. Be VERY wary.

It looks bogus to me but does this mean it's on my computer? Spyware? Or can Messenger deliver something to you from uh, the internet connection out there somewhere? Point is, I just installed this morning.

Now, a different message, says the URL is "windowsreg.com."

I just disabled Messenger at startup and rebooted. To see if it happens now.

If that's what the message says verbatim, it's B.S.

Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and download & install the critical updates.

Download Microsoft's AntiSpyware program, it's free from http://www.microsoft.com/

Internet Explorer does a good job of blocking popups, and you don't have to download anything.

Also make sure you're running an antivirus program as well.

....and turn off the "Messenger" service:

Start-->Control Panel-->Performance and Maintenance-->Administrative Tools-->Services

Find "Messenger" in there. Set its startup to "Disable"

I think a service pack will eventually turn that off tho...

pull the internet connection out of that computer.

didnt i tell you that you would be reinstalling xp, and that you couldnt fix the problem any other way, AND to do it sooner rather than later?

do you think i am stupid?

did you wipe the drive first, or do an over-the-top install? i suspect the latter. if so, you fixed nothing.

first: pull the damn connection out of that machine.

second: wipe the drive. reinstall.

third: buy a mac. i dont think this pc machine is being used for anything that a mac cannot do, and you should be able to handle a mac just fine. they come WITH the os install discs. they are NOT attacked via internet connection. they can do file sharing and any other thing a pc can do except for a wide variety of mpeg tools and games.

i was right before, maybe you will listen now.

not cereal, you're making an assumption and you know what that can do...

That sounds really good except this laptop is MY computer, the other was my niece's.

i reread your post and you never stated that it was a laptop. noone would have any idea other than your ongoing issue with your neices machine.

it is these problems exactly for which i have no connection to the outside world on my pc. there are ways to do it, but none entirely foolproof.

the machine i am on now is a pentium M laptop, xp pro, with 2 software firewalls, hardware firewall (firebox soho 6) and dsl router with firewall features. also the machine has been recently upgraded with another layer of protection, officescan which runs constantly, degrading performance further. while this is a plenty fast machine, i would never subject myself to trying to run a daw on it or anything else. with all this anti-attack BS it has, it would be useless as anything but an internet connection/word processor.

my 200mhz 7100 can do everything this xp box can do on the net, just as fast. and it was $20.

if your laptop is used for music in any way i standby my position to yank the connection out of it completely. buy a slow old $20 pos mac to surf. end of attack problems.

Common sense is the first line of defense. As others have said -- if you're concerned your Windows system files aren't up to date go to Microsoft's site and do their Windows Update. Never, ever respond to those ominous (and thoroughly bogus) pop ups that say "Your computer is infected!"

I haven't used background AV softare since the mid-90's, I've had an always-on connection since '99 or 2000... and I haven't had a virus since '96 or so when I got one from an infected floppy install disk. (And that time I didn't use common sense. I bought the last mousepad on the shelf, even though it had been opened and returned. I didn't check the disk until it was way too late... Live and learn.)

It's a disgrace that otherwise legit websites take adverts like those thoroughly reprehensible "Your computer is infected" popups, but many of them do, including a lot of big magazines and outfits like Soundclick and other entertainment sites.

I'd also suggest to run AVG with its autoprotect stuff ON. I spent guh...a dozen? hours fixing up a friend's Windows 98 box from some horrible infections. He'd gotten the box for free from some not-so-savvy friends who had never patched anything on it; so you can imagine how bad it was. All the regular anti-spyware stuff couldn't get rid of it - Spybot, Ad-Aware.

Annoyingly, AVG was the last thing I thought to try 'cuz this wasn't a "virus" infection, exactly, but don't worry about semantics.
Yay for AVG.

AVG is the best. I truly love this software. It has no noticable overhead that I can find (Symantec are you listening  ?) , other than XP taking a few seconds longer to boot (big whoop!). You can get it here .
