Cap was broken on a gas can for my lawn mower and about two cups of gasoline spilled in the back of my Durango - need help! How do I get it cleaned up and how do I get the smell to go away?

Thanks!

Light a match and buy a Prius :p

No, seriously, try some kitty litter if it's still wet, let it absorb and then vacuum out the dust.

If it's too dry, you'll need the industrial size container of Carpet Fresh

Yeah, I bought some kitty litter and hopefully that will absorb it okay. I'm sure some carpet fresh will be in order too.

You'll need to take the carpet out and rinse it with a hose. Kitty litter will do a lot, but not below the level of the carpet. Carpet fresh will only add another smell to the gasoline smell, then you'd really be nauseated.

I have had this happen to me. The only way to be at least 95% sure of getting rid of the smell is to take the carpet and padding out, set them on your driveway, and turn the hose on them. A good half-hour will do it; make sure you get both sides. A liquid soap will help, but remember it's gotta be a smell you can live with. You need to dilute the fuel so much that vapors are near impossible to detect, otherwise, you'll come back out to the car one hot day with a few bags of groceries and open up the car, only to get nauseous.

If you can find anyone who has an air purifier that generates ozone, put it in there with windows up and zap it for a couple hours. Ozone removes just about any smell.

A liquid soap will help, but remember it's gotta be a smell you can live with.

I tend to favour unscented laundry detergents for this, i.e. Tide Free. No dyes or smell whatsoever.

In theory, the gasoline will eventually evaporate out of the carpet, right?

Rent a steam cleaner?

Well, with gas fumes, one of the last things you'd need is something electrical, like an ozone generator. Especially with the windows closed.

Matt: All car carpets are removeable. Look around the edges; you may see a plastic lip, which is simply a snap-wrap kind of thing. Otherwise, there's usually a set of screws holding it in. You'll likely have to take out the seats, too, but that's usually not a problem.

Agreed, no NOT use anything electrical when cleaning this. Gasoline is HIGHLY FLAMABLE, even if it's just vapors from the carpet, and one little spark can turn your SUV into a pile of burned out steel.

Take it to a professional, it's not that expensive. If you can afford to drive an SUV in todays gas prices you can afford a professional cleaning. Petroleum based odors are very difficult to remove with consumer products. Lets the pros handle it.

Agreed, but put a cat in there with it.

Eventually the cat will pee, making the gasoline smell the least of your worries. ;\)

A detailer will probably charge you no more than $40 to do this.

$40 ain't bad! I'll see who I can find.

Offramp, since I've got the third row seating it's rather a pain, but I'll do it if needed - thanks for the suggestions.

What about baking soda? Won't that absorb the smell?

Hmmm...detailers usually run around $100-150 here in Mass. Might be chaper in Utah, but I doubt by that much.

Yes, for a complete detailing. I was thinking $40 just for the de-smellifying. Pulling the carpets, yada-yada.

Sure, it's around $150 for a really good internal/external detail job.

Jeff, thanks - you googled my topic title! I tried more general google searches and didn't find much.

Other Jeff (Weasel), turns out it would be quite expensive if they'd need to take my carpet out.

Thanks all!

The smell will quickly permeate the entire interior, like overnight, so a complete internal detailing will be required to remove the smell.

Nick, you're right the smell can permeate quickly - I've had to have all my windows and back hatch open day and night the last two days to avoid it. Of course I've taken all the valuables out...

I'm hoping to have a chance tomorrow to get it taken care of properly.

Hmmmm....

Last Friday I opened a bottle of wine and had a glass when my wife called up and asked me to come by her shop for a end of Friday in-store party. So I carefully wedge the just opened bottle of wine between the passenger seat and the hump that runs down the middle of my Passat.

Yeah, I know.

1st corner the bottle slips out of my "foolproof" holder and proceeds to empty the ENTIRE bottle into the passenger carpet.

Uh....yeah. It smells really bad. I pull into work Monday morning feeling like I better park in the far north 40.

Carpet Fresh ain't gonna cut it

The worse thing is spilled milk.

Uh, except for the time my friend Putt put (sorry for the pun) a frog in the trunk of my car. It climbed inside the frame and died. And then the time he put a fish in my tackle box, which I kept in my trunk. That sucker stunk to high heaven.

Years ago, I nuked some coffee in microwave far longer than it should have. The apartment was unliveable. Tried everything. An air purifier that produced ozone, it zapped it all away, totally gone in one hour.
