Hey guys!
Before you all move away....

We need good music to play in our NPR programs. Typically, music is used to roll out of news segments and as short breaks and buttons between segments.

We almost ALWAYS use instrumental ONLY. Sometimes "deadrolls" will have lyrics... most do not. Breaks NEVER have lyrics. If you have music with lyrics you want to submit... cool... sometimes we use a instrumental intro or button. Or... you could send in an instrumental version.

I can get your music in front of the directors (who choose music) for Day 2 Day and News and Notes with Ed Gordon. Check these shows out for their general feel here: http://www.npr.org
We happen to be in desparate need of "sad sounding African music". Yeah... no drums... but sounds sad and makes you think of Africa... think "trouble in Sudan music". We're having a really hard time finding stuff like that....

I MAKE NO GUARENTEE THAT YOUR MUSIC WILL BE USED. Your songs MUST ALL BE REGISTERED with ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC. NPR pays the typical broadcast fees to this organizations to use music. They DO NOT play stuff that is not registered with these organizations.

I'm just hoping some of you will like a cool opprotunity to get some of your music played. Because I have to say it: I personally take no responsibility if your music doesn't get played.

All that being said:

To submit your stuff:
Send at least 3 copies of anything you want to submit... I want to get one to each "person of power". So 3 CDs.

CD only... no MP3s

Label professionally: Sharpie labeled discs hit the trash the instant I see them... for your own good. Include track times please.
Also tell us if you are ASCAP etc!!!!

Include a letter telling me your Musicplayer ID (I want to know who's stuff I'm getting!) and which tracks may have longer instrumental stuff we can use.

Have fun!

Very cool, Sherri. (I never knew your name beyond Valky! \:D )

Now I have to go about finding the stuff and registering it. ;\) Hope you're doing this for the long haul. ;\)

I sincerely hope you get some material from several members whose instrumental music I've downloaded over the years. There is some really good stuff that comes outta here.

Speaking of NPR stories, any chance of getting the Tsunami relief songs and story in front of anyone? Someone might have to register them first, as well. Just a thought with regards to the story behind the songs, in addition to the songs themselves.

I'll be in touch.. eventually.

Hola Sherri!

Thanks very much for the offer. Some of us -like myself- might not be able to seize this opportunity mainly due to the ASCAP/BMI thing.

My music is ASCAP btw, but I only registered my songs with lyrics at this time.

You rock! ... well, you already knew it.
Love...

Gus

I have to do some registration, but since I'm such a limited singer, I have a vast library of instrumental music.

Is there a time frame for this, or is it ongoing?

Just to know...I register all my stuff with S.I.A.E. that is the italian right management society, that I know for sure it has agreements with the above american societies. Let me know, please, if for those users it's ok, maybe not immediatly because I'm in the middle of a project, but you never know.... \:\) I have done a lot of stuff of that kind...

What if....I sent you two guitar instrumentals, and a notarized release saying NPR owes me nothing for unlimited on air use of said music, although I will retain rights to it.

Valky/Sherri...I just emailed this topic to my cousin Jenny in D.C. She's the one I was bragging on a few months back for winning like 5 "Wammies" (Washington, D.C. area musician of the year type awards). Hopefully she's got some stuff that you all could use. Her website is http://www.jennifercutting.com

valky - thanks for the heads up. i have 4 or 5 CDs i may send you. couple of Qs:

1. should i select specific tracks from each CD for consideration?
2. do you want a little written info on the selected tracks?
3. or do i just send in entire CDs and let you select things that might work for you?

Nope. Will not work in this situation. Maybe if you were an unsigned artist we wanted to do a story on we could use that... but otherwise... someone in legal would have to get your note.. file you note for all time... and otherwise make a crapload of a papertrail to follow.... all for an artist we're not featuring? Na... ain't gonna happen.

I gotcha, sounds like a good opportunity for someone already set up with ASCAP.

#3 please
You'll have a better chance if you just send the whole disc. We have so many different types of stories... we try to match the mood of the segments with the music so you never know what kind of mood we're in! \:\)

YES: This is long-term people! \:\) You can send your stuff in whenever you are ready. Just make sure your Musicplayer name is in the letter so I can know it's from my buddies here! \:\)

Hi Valky...I am working on instumental projects, and may well take you up on your offer (just in case!). But I wonder, having lurked for a long time on DA7.COM & only recently posted there...are you still using the 7, or have you moved on? A recent "where are they now" post asked about you.

Valky, you are tops in my book. I don't do much purely instrumental stuff, but I did need some more incentive to register with one of those organizations.

Thanks for thinking of us.
