It seems that much of the programing has gone the way of wheels and home makeovers.

Hey! You're right! It happened so slowly that I didn't even notice.
Seems that a lot of television lately is just "Cookie Cutter" stuff. They take one show that seems to be doing well and then come out with ten carbon copies of it.
I miss M*A*S*H...

Their audience also named Ronald Reagan as the greatest American of all time. They also changed the Wings channel into the Military Channel, which eliminated some really good aero-related content. The Discovery channels used to be a lot different. The only one I watch now is Science, and once the Intelligent Design Network finds that, it will become the Christian Scientology Subliminal Message Channel. I think that they just looked at the demographics and decided to make it into the Disscoveryourass enterprise.

I think it happened at about the same time as the History Channel became the Hitler Channel.

I've noticed that too. I use to watch a lot of shows on Discovery now there's hardly anything I'm interested in. It's all the same old crap.

When their displays went to LCD, they thought it meant Lowest Common Denominator.

The best show on Discovery right now is, hands down, Mythbusters. There might be a couple of others, but nothing standing out to me. Other than that, most of the programming on what I used to be able to call quality channels has certainly been dumbed down in the name of ratings.
Cheers! Spencer

Yep, Mythbusters usually gets my attention. I liked the one yesterday where they were shooting into a pool to see how far under you had to go to be safe. Strangely enough, the more powerful weapons were the least effective. They shot a fifty caliber and boy did it roar!

Remember, the folks who want to decimate the PBS budget point to things like A&E, Discovery, and History Channel as marketplace options for stuff that PBS does.

Yeah, Mythbusters is probably the ONLY entertaining show on Discovery. Everything else is way too motorcycled oriented nowadays. It's really dissappointing, as Discovery used to be one of the best science channels on TV. Thank god for PBS and the Animal Planet Channel.
Travel Channel is a joke as well. All they show is a bunch of super posh travel destinations that only millionaires can visit. They never show you how to, say, travel to France on a shoestring budget, or anything useful. Las Vegas IS NOT the only friggin place to visit in the world!!!

I agree, too many mechanics on Discovery lately. If I was interested in that stuff I'd hang out at my local car or motorcycle repair shop all day. I miss the true life crime shows like "The New Detectives."

'Bout a foot.
Think about what happens when you jump off a bridge into water. At a certain velocity the water is as hard as cement. The round disintigrated (sp?) as it hit the water.
The slower rounds penetrated the water without disintigrating...

don't you get the Hallmark channel? M*A*S*H is on about 6 hours a day.

Yeah, and TLC is filled with those home makeover shows. I used to watch Discovery and TLC religiously, and now I hardly watch them at all, except to see stuff like Mythbusters (agreed, a great show). The Hitler channel is less Hitler than it used to be, but they only show something interesting every once in a while. Peace

Well speak of the devil! Just last night I saw a GREAT show on the History Channel. The show was: Taming the Wild West: The Legend of Jedediah Smith
I had never heard of the man, but he is quite a character. He was and explorer / Fur trapper and the first to reach California and Oregon by land. He got his scalp practically ripped off in a Grizzly attack and resumed leading his exploration in party within two weeks of the attack. He fought a lot of Native Americans. He discovered a pass where the oregon trail later passed through the Rockies. The show was very in-depth and I highly recommend it.

Yeah, the History Channel really does still have some quality shows (IE, Modern Marvels).
They've gotten way past their initial programming, which was almost entirely about WWII.
