Songrytr and I, along with our wives, went and saw a taping of the Late Late Show withy Craig Ferguson Show a few weeks ago. The musical guest was Fountains of Wayne. While the show itself that we saw has already aired, they didn't play FOW's performance along with the show - for whatever reason, they saved that for use at a later date.
Well, tonight, 7-15-05, is that "later date". They played "Maureen", their current single. They nailed it. Check your local listings for time and channel...
Just a little heads up for the FOW fans out there.

Thanks for the heads up!
I'm a HUGE FOW fan!
First 'day' on this forum, and I'm already learning stuff.
They have a new album coming out then?
That'd be cool news....

Out Of State Plates was released a couple of weeks back. It's a collection of covers and b-sides. Good stuff indeed.

I Learned about them with their 'Stacys Mom' single. Thought it was OK, but my daughter really liked it. I bought her the CD, and she hated it as a whole, so she gave it to me. I listened to it, and was astounded. Every song on that disk is a masterpiece. I quickly bought up the other two FOW CD's I could find, and all three are now in my top 20 list for sure...
I aspire to one day write songs as well as they do.
If you like FOW, check out a band called Frickin' A. Their disk is also a masterpiece in songwriting and production. Near perfect.
I'll look for Out Of States Plates soon... Thanks.

I do remember "Sink To the Bottom" from a few years back and liked it, but I had no idea they were THAT good until stumbling into Welcome Interstate Managers via Stacy's Mom. I quickly picked up the rest of their catalog and have been diggin' them ever since.
I got a freind into them by sending various lyrics (Valley Winter Song, Bright Future In Sales, etc.) across the country to him... he couldn't believe how cool the writing was and is now blown away with the albums as well.

I remember a thread on them (by Phil maybe?) and put out some hints. Got all three disks for X-mass here while back. Very excellant music indeed!

Thanks for the tip, Phil.
We promised one of my daughters that we'd pick up her copy of Harry Potter tonight at 12m. Yes, it's crazy I know. With a little luck and a few well thrown elbows, I should be out of Barnes and Noble and back home in time to catch FOW. They probably won't be on the show until after 1am, probably in the last segment around 1:30a.

tamoore, welcome to the MP forums.
I like all three of the albums I have (still have to get Out Of State Plates...), but my opinion is the reverse of Lee's - and that doesn't happen very often. WIM is one of my 10 fave albums of all time.

"Utopia Parkway" wins by a nose in a photo finish over "WIM" for me.
My wife grew up near Utopia Parkway.

Ok.. Just scored the CD('s) and listened to the first disk...
I can tell that this is the 'b' material, but it's still really good. A little more mellow of a vibe most of the way through than the other records....
BTW, WIM is my favorite, followed by Utopia.
On to disk #2

The second CD is better than the first, IMO. Some more uptempo stuff, and the B. Spears cover is a hoot! They actually seem to make it worth listening too....
Thanks again for the tip.....

Hey thanks for the heads up Phil! Because of your timely tip I was able to watch and record them on Craig Ferguson.
Their earlier performance on Conan was flawed but still good, but this time they had it so together that I'd say they were musically one of the strongest live performing bands I've seen on late Night TV.

Hi There
Please don't consider this an attack, but maybe simply ignorance.
I have listened those guys but I don't find anything "that" cool as many of you do.
What is so special with them? What should I listen in orden I could appreciate them the way you do?

These guys do "power pop" really well. The songs just kinda get stuck in the brain.
Me, I'm a sucker for this stuff. But not everyone is.

No problemo Gus... evevryone has different tastes. If you grew up in the 60's through 80's, and love powerpop, then you'll probably "get" them. If, OTOH, you dig jazz, or metal or techno, you might not like them. And that's okay. It would be a boring world if we all liked the same things.

My 22 year old daughter is my barometer for what new stuff to listen to. I bought her the CD for her last year and she just didn't dig it.
I had already listened to it before I gave it to her, and I saw them on a few TV spots, and I don't feel them either.
Different strokes........

Song's like Stacy's Mom in particular evoke comparisons with greats like The Cars.
It's just plain simple excellent powerpop.
And it's a testament to their appeal that an old fart like Phil and a young man like me can both find them great to listen to!
:p
P.S. And Phil - if you don't buy the Finn Bros album I'm gonna come over there and beat you to a pulp and barbecue the leftovers

For me the "FOW appeal" has everything to do with my background as a listener. It's really pretty logical, beginning (as it does for so many of us born in the early '60s) with the Beatles. Since then, there has always been a few artists faithfully carrying the torch of rock, hook and smart lyrics. If you loved The Raspberries, The Cars, Costello, Big Star, Cheap Trick, Matthew Sweet, Weezer or any of the other purveyors of big pop, you'll probably adore FOW.
For me it's also the fact that they're a group of guys pretty close to my own age who have managed to keep big label $$ supporting some great songs. No small feat, indeed.
And Chris Collingwood's favorite songwriter is also my favorite. That's gotta help.

What is so special with them? What should I listen in orden I could appreciate them the way you do? To me, it's all about the melody first. The FOW songwriter has a way of crafting a melody that is so musically friendly that it is instantly memorable.
Secondly, it's about the musical hooks. They have a great ability to put together sonically interesting music, always with a memorable guitar or synth line to hold it all together.
Lyrically, FOW is not about the 'same old' tired pop music love/breakup topics. 'All Kinds of Time' is a (metaphoric?) song about a single football play. 'Fire Island' is about trashing the parents house while they're away for vacation. The lyrics are always simple, and always tell a story without having to be cute.
To go along with the great melody lines, they also always seem to have the PERFECT harmonies for each song. Never too much, never not enough. Always just perfect IMO.
Just some of the reasons I like them, and I think they tower over other bands that do the same style of music.
Another band that does this style GREAT, is 'Frickin' A'. If you haven't heard their songs, PLEASE check them out! You FOW fans will love them, I think.
Send me a PM, and I'll send you a link to an MP3 of the first song on their album. It's just awesome
