i want to fool around with M/S micing, but currently dont have any fig-8 or multi-pattern mics to use for the Side mic. are there any inexpensive fig8 or multi-pattern condensers that you might recommend? (the multi-pattern mic must have a fig 8 setting).
or should i jsut buy a cheap MS mic instead? like what? thanks.

Samson makes the C03, Behringer has the B2, Studio Projects has the B3 and C3, Nady makes the TCM1150, CAD makes the M179...
I could go on for a bit, but I think the real question is what you consider inexpensive. For some folks, the rock bottom price of the C03 (about $100) is just cheap enough, while other folks might be used to multi-thousand dollar mics, and feel that the Rode NT2000 is a nicely chewable $600.
The comments that I can make are:
I have a pair of Samson monitors that I really like.
I've had somewhat mixed experiences with Behringer in general, but their mics that I do own have been indestructible workhorses. (I wish their DI boxes were the same way.)
People have said good things about Studio Projects mics.
I own and use some Nady drum mics, and I think that they are basically okay (though not very exciting.)
I've got a couple of CAD mics. The handheld vocal mic seems quite decent. The kick mic is VERY good.
Actually, I think we have gotten to the point where, if a mic passes signal that isn't just awful from the get-go, a little EQ and compression is all you need to get a usable tone. If you want that "subtle magic," though, you'll need to spend more greenbacks.

You might be able to find one of the old CAD Equitek-II BDC's. Pretty flat and uncolored, they even have a built-in battery for field work that automatically recharges off phantom (I've never used it; I think the charge is only good for a short time). When I was still working with outside clients, it was a favorite. Then again, my clients weren't exactly the Neve-and-U47 crowd.

I've got two Equitek II's... they actually have TWO rechargable batteries in each unit. When fully charged, they're good for about 5-6 hours of use. With phantom supplied, you can go forever.
They are a decent mic, and probably not very expensive on the used market, but I have not checked on their "going rate" lately. They work well for M-S recording duties.

I've been very happy with the Studio Projects B3. Where a other LD condensers are too bright, this one just sounds sweet. The Fig.8 mode works great in M/S config. too.

AT 4050... buy something nice. It sounds great on a bunch of different sources and it's very smooth... not hyped. Nice mic.
