...old 7" reel-to-reel tapes that I had completely forgotten about. Some have a numbering system that I vaguely remember, having something to do with the way I ran my little home studio a long time ago; turns out they're archived masters of my sketchs done on an old Fostex four-track cassette studio thingy, one of the nicer ones form the era, the series that was laid out more like a console. 460, maybe? And the board itself was something like, what and 840? Had eight channels and (I want to say) four subs out.

Still others are air checks from my days in radio, @ 1985 (!!!). I sound so wierd...so...so young.

I've only loaded three tapes so far.

I may need to run down the street and get myself a bottle of Dahlwinnie. This could get really interesting.

YESSS!!!!

I just found a LONG lost tape from August of '81...two friends and I in a basement jam session; because the three of us were all audio tech geeks--pre-engineerish types--it's gonna sound pretty damned good. I remember how we mic'd it up, and I came away amazed out how good it sounded for being just two mics pointed at our setup.

Getting ready to wind it up....heh....

Don't forget to cut some mp3's for the rest of us! ;\) \:D

I remember those Fostex units well. (Showing my age. ) They were pretty hip in the day!

That was my buddy's first 4-track. (My brother already had a Porta 2 I'd been playing with, extensively.)

well....batshit.

The box was the tape I was looking for, but the tape in it was the master edit I did for a Rush concert radio spot back in '84.

damndamndamn.

Not sure I'd want to unleash the horror that is early offramp on you guys, especially back when he was just a little-known frontage road exit.

Hmmmm... I'm stumped. To the best of my knowledge, Fostex never made a "console styled" multitracker that ran 7" reel to reel tape. The did make a couple of 4 track 1/4" reel to reel decks, but IIRC, the only "console style" unit that used that layout and tape type was the Tascam 388... which was actually an 8 track and not a 4 track. Looked like an overgrown Portastudio - which is essentially what it was. \:\)

Oops - never mind - I missed the "cassette" mention and only saw the reference to the 7" reels. \:o My bad!

Hmmm...time for a Photoshop episode, jsut to mess with your mind.

\:D

Funny thing is, I saw a Fostex mixer, just like the one I had, on eBay a couple of weeks ago. I think it went for something like $50. I thought seriously about picking it up.

Then I woke up.

Oh, hell.

Just found a final mix of an original tune from a band I was in back in '90; I engineered and mixed the whole thing in the 24 track house I worked in at the time.

The stumbler?

Here I sit, without an NAB hub. \:\(

That sounds so cool - to find a box of golden memories like that, Offramp. I'd like to know where the DAT of all my first efforts to put together a resume went....

I sometimes go back and re-listen o the first CDs I "professionally" engineered. Usually, a flood of ood memories of those sessions come flying back - as if it were only yesterday. In reality, they were 9 years ago. I've done 50 full-length albums in that time. Not to mention weird one-off things.

Thanks Offramp. I'm going to go reminisce tonight when I get home. Good luck finding an NAB hub: if I had one, I'd overnight it to you.

Cheers!

I wish I had all the weird, wonderful things we recorded to our old, cheap, reel-to-reel recorder. I have a tiny bit that was transfered to casette years ago.

I occasionally listen to cassettes of stuff I did in the late 1980's and early 1990's, but lots of it was lost. Damn singer from my band in 1992 borrowed one cassette that was (yes I'm an idiot!) irreplacable and lost it. Still kickin' myself, a dozen years later, for letting him borrow it.

In no way am I attempting to beat the digital vs. analogue dead horse, but I was totally enthused about the rich, full sound out of that simple little Fostex A-series machine last night, especially given the totally "cheese home studio" environment on most of these things.
It got me to thinking about doing something whack like tracking some drums in DP, mixing them down to the two-track, then re-importing them in a new file into DP.
Not like I really have the time to do this sort of thing, or that I have the time to tackle any of the the other 578 things on my "to-do" list.

Congrats on a great find! Put everything on CD or DVD for the long haul!

I recently came across the studio-cut demo from the band i was in in 1992-ish. I haven't listened to it to see if this was one of the final mixes or not, but regardless it's going onto a CD for archiving.

I just have to pull out the 4-track and do it

Fwiw, i have about 100 tapes or so in storage that is a catalogue of my progress from first getting a guitar up until about 1997 when I got tendonitis and had to stop playing. I hope those survive the long haul like yours did offramp.

Oh and btw... we'd all love to hear you as a wee frontage road exit. The golden years!
