In light of the recent news regarding the forums, I am very concerned about the contents of the forums.
It is my desire to see the contents of all of the MP forums archived and preserved.
It has been reported to me that this isn't just a quick easy thing to do. It has been noted that this would take, time, money, and the efforts of somebody to make this possible.

Can you contribute time, money, server space, or anything else that would make it possible to preserve the legacy of these years at the MP forums?

If so, sign in here and let us know what you can contribute to preserve the history that we have all made here over the years.

I'm willing to contribute money and my time to help.

These are more than just some forums. These are a collective expression that has spanned years, life changing events in history, and the continuing evolution of audio.

And if all of this isn't worth saving, than why are we here?

How much server space are we talking about in total?
How much traffic?

I don't want to contribute. I don't care if my 14,000-some-odd posts vanish into the ether like dust in a hurricane.

I know this may be an unpopular opinion, but in the same way I don't walk around with a tape recorder to preserve and reflect back on every conversation I have with people, I feel no strong attachment to the past "performance art" we accomplished collectively.

I don't mean to sound callous and do understand your desire, Stranger. Purely from a personal perspective, I'd prefer to move forward and let the past be left in the past. Just my opinion... your mileage may vary.

I'm not even sure.

This was the response I got from a PM with Jim Quinn...

Here is the response from Mr. Quinn regarding the contents of the forums...

Quote:
Jason,

Any request for content would have to come from Craig and be approved by CMP.

I will tell you honestly, the forum software does not utilize a database engine, but rather a flat-file format. Providing content of individual forums for use in other forum software solutions would require a considerable effort and cost.

I am working with Criag to find a solution, but I don't think that anyone will come up with the dollars necessary to perform a translation and integration.

Talk to Craig if you are serious about this. I get my direction from him.

Jim Quinn
I think we can get this to happen if we can get enough people together to make it happen.

And I respect your opinion. And of course, I strongly disagree. \:D

I know this isn't the Library Of Congress or anything, but I do think it has the same level of value and deserves preservation.

Sure. It's like a diary for a lot of folks. I remember writing here immediately after 9/11, as well as when I left TASCAM. There are lots of things I documented here that would seem as if they should hold some degree of personal importance, if only for sentimental reasons. And yet, I'm just not very worried about being able to look back on those things. They're all in my mind already... lots of storage space in there (it's pretty empty for the most part).

So yeah, it's just a personal perspective, and I respect yours as well.

Among the things that would hold value to me, for example, are recording tips, from Bruce and others in SSS as well as much content in Phil's forum and the archived Massenburg forum. I don't need that info all the time, but I have done searches and found helpful info.

Problem is, it would be hard to cull all the "useful" stuff into an archive, because opinions would differ as to what's useful enough to keep (I mean, to a degree).

If the powers that be decide to no longer archive old forum contents here, there is software in existence that allows users to archive websites for their own reference. For example:

Blue Crab

Find more options at VersionTracker.com

Best,

Geoff

Thanks for the links Geoff

I wonder if those apps will work with discussion boards? That is, each thread is dragged from one big file essentially so wondering whether it is possible to grab a whole forum?

I agree and am with you on that.I care more about the future and am not the type to look back.Like Jeff though,I do understand how it would be important to others for their own reasons, but also at the same time I never viewed this section of the forum as a reference to Pro Audio methods and tips(although that did occur),but rather what it was,a lounge for musicians discussing the world along with music/gear/methods with a heavy accent on the loung part.It was at it's most importance to me while it was happening, not after. For the record,I've never owned a camera in my entire life, nor have I ever desired to have one.
