I've done all I am willing to do to resurrect this Linux laptop from doing squirrelly things. I finally give. I will go back to Windows. This is what I have...

Dell Inspiron 7500
Pentium III 450Mhz
256MB RAM
10GB HD
Linux Xandros OS

I want to put WinXp on here. I have Win98 if that one won't work. I assume they have IE in them and I can browse (to Firefox) later.

How do I do this? I've already backed up files I need. Do I just put CD in and go or what? Thanks if you can help.

First go to the Dell website, download the appropriate drivers for your laptop, and burn them to a CD. Stock Windows CDs often do not have drivers for laptop components. If you do this, then you can get everything up & running.

BTW - don't know what your issues are, but did you try to reinstall Linux? That might help.

My question is do I just install from the Win cd and that's it and it'll wipe everything clean in the install?

Short answer is yes.

Long answer is get the hell rid of Xandros and install Mepis 3.3.1. Download the iso and burn the live cd & test check it out. If you like it, install it. It has been rock solid for me other than an install issue that seems to have been a conflict with Win 2K on a dual boot and that issue went away when I formatted the hard drive and installed Mepis on it alone. I'll re-install 2K on the second drive at a later date.
Mepis is probably the over-all best distro out there as it pertains to ease of install, usabililty once installled, upgradablilty and ease of installing and un-installing programs.
It's Debian based using synamptic or apt-get for program acquisition.
Mepis comes with a boat load of apps installed and the un-needed are easily un-installed.
You'll get Firefox and KDEs browser, Open Office suite, video and audio players, ftp utililty, a cd/dvd burner app & numerous other apps. I've not fire up Win2K on it again because I've just decided to fire up the laptop if I need work related stuff going on though that's kind of a pain in the ass, it's better than re-booting to the Win OS and I'll be checking out WINE and some other apps that will allow me to run Windows environment programs.

If you don't like Mepis, then by all means go to WinXP. Realize that if that install is already on another computer you are out of luck and will have to buy another copy.
