Personally, I have no doubt believing that story Dak. A horse or mule can do some serious damage if they kick or step on something (I've been on the wrong end of both a few times), and that's how they defend themselves... the thing that I have not seen previously is the biting, thrashing, shaking of a predator by a mule. I found that pretty darned amazing. But as the old saying goes, when a mouse is attacked by a cat, the mouse may fight back... and sometimes even a mouse might get lucky.
I showed these shots to my wife, and she told me about a time when her brother in law was kicked square in the chest by one of her dad's horses... it knocked him out completely and her dad initially feared it had killed him. She also told me about something she recently saw on Animal Planet, where seveal lions were attacking an elephant, and although the elephant was injured in the exchange, the lions fared far worse.
So while a 200 lb. mountain lion is a dangerous predator and has plenty of weapons at its disposal (claws, teeth and speed / stealth), a 1,000 lb. mule is a big, powerful animal and is hardly defenceless.
"Bad ass" indeed.

BTW, I've always been more concerned by the threat of big cats than I have been by bears - at least locally. Sometimes people ask why I carry when I'm in the boonies, and things like this are exactly why... or at least part of the reason why.

Horses can fuck you up. A friend of my wife was pretty seriously messed up by a berzerk horse that bit her on the neck and tossed her around. She was in the hospital for some time. Luckily she didn't get stomped.

Philip sez: Sometimes people ask why I carry when I'm in the boonies, and things like this are exactly why... or at least part of the reason why. The other part, of course, is because of the most dangerous beast of 'em all...those danged "rogue humans!"
That particular cougar doesn't look to be in the 200-pound range...maybe 100-130 pounds. The "Arizona variety" don't often make it past 150. (I've got a hard-core outdoorsman brother in Flagstaff, who emailed me these same photos awhile back.)
Interesting cougar fact: They have one the highest kills-per-attempt ratios of any of the big cats. This also suggests that this particular cat might be on the young side, with not enough "street smarts" to know what to attack, when, or how.

The most dangerous animals of all.
But you are correct sir.
And you're right - that doesn't look like a 200 lb cat... and most aren't that big, but I'd say 200 lbs is about as large a cat (mountain lion) as I've ever personally seen.
I think Dak or someone mentioned that the dogs might have been the intended prey. Cats will oftentimes go for domestic pets - dogs, domestic cats, etc. And of course, many of the attacks on humans by mountain lions / cougars are on small children...
When I lived up in the mountains, we used to see cats, bears and coyotes... the coyotes were pretty sneaky... there were a few cases where they'd send a bitch in heat out, draw a domestic dog to her, and she'd lure him into the woods, where the pack would attack it. Most coyotes wouldn't fare well one on one fight with a large dog (my largest dog is easily twice the size of the typical coyote), but there is strength in numbers.

I believe Phil, but I would like to see an image of such a big, beautiful yard monster!
Is this the guy that got a growth removed from his knee, and howled the whole time in his overnight stay of the vet's office? He's probably a good dog, and just wanted to go home He's a GREAT dog... probably THE most loving and affectionate "Laprador" I've ever seen.
But he's not the dog I was talking about. He's not very tall - actually about the same as the typical coyote, but much more muscular. He's about 85 lbs. His name is Sean... we call him "chunky", "Chunky Bear", "Bear Cub" or just "bear" as often as we call him Sean. I'd give you his full papered name, but there's not enough space for it all on the server...
Sean is actually the SMALLEST of my three dogs.
We have a Chow / Sheppard mix that my wife found / rescued. Her name is Roxy, and she's got to be pushing 100 lbs. Beautiful dog, and very protective. And now she's very sweet - but when we first got her, it was obvious she had been abused, and it took a long time to earn her trust. But that dog would die for me now - no question about it in my mind.
The "big girl" is Shannon... all 125 lbs of her. She needs to go on a diet... moreso than Roxy, who could afford to lose five or ten pounds. I'd say Shannon's "ideal" weight should be more along the lines of 105-110 lbs or so. She's extremely smart, loves food and kids (and doesn't confuse the two ), and is very well trained, if I do say so myself. We call her "Queen", "Big Queen Doggerty" or just "Shannon Doggerty".
I could probably post some pics at some point if you'd like.
