Modest Mouse = Gang of Four/XTC/Tom Waits for spice

Kaiser Chiefs = (I can't pin it down though I recognize it)

The Killers = Duran Duran/The Cure/80's U2

What are some of the other bands involved in this interesting trend?

or

Can you add to the "influenced by" list?

BTW, I DO realize Tom Waits isn't "new wave".

The Bravery (haven't listened to them extensively, so I can't say for sure the influences)

VHS or Beta (I'm close to buying this one)

I also hear some Smiths in the Killers, as well as musical elements of Blondie.

I was thinking the same thing, except I added a pinch of Joy Division.

Smiths and Blondie... yeah you're right. I haven't heard the 2 bands you metion. I'll check them out. I'm producing a band that could be

Band = early Talking Heads/Icicle Works/Oingo Boingo/early Peter Gabriel.

This whole New New Wave Wave thing is wierd but I think it's fun the 2nd time around too!

I forgot Interpol. I haven't heard them yet so I don't have an Interpol = blah/blah/blah.

Fountains Of Wayne... hardly a one trick / style pony, but their biggest hit (Stacy's Mom) and their current single (Maureen) are both similar to The Cars.

Saw a band the other night in L.A. called She Wants Revenge... about 70% Bauhaus and 30% Depeche Mode.

Actually they had a couple of hits in the 90's that were probably bigger than "Stacy's Mom". One was "Radiation Vibe" and the other was "Sink to the Bottom".

Maybe RV was bigger... but I didn't think it had the widespread exposure of SM. Anyone got the chart positions for each?

From their website
"Adam sips from his Pellegrino and talks in careful measured tones. It's as if he's the wise one, or at least the one less likely to pull a knife out mid-interview. Well yes FOW but... somehow that's not really what I'm talking about. FOW are better than the bands I'm describing. They can mock the new wave then turn around and do Simon and Garfunkel, hippy music, then barhouse C&W. You know what I mean.

I'm taking about bands that are coping the look, sound, and vibe of 80's New Wave as a marketing ploy to pretend to 13 year olds that they invented it! \:\)

I like the whole deal but I wouldn't want to put FOW in there because they're WAY better than any of those bands.

Stephan and Super 8,

Wow, so THAT's where Peter Murphy's been! Pretty cool. Now, where my old black nail polish from '85. I knew I put here in here somewhere...

You're right. I live in a hole - I've only heard "Stacy's Mom" once on local radio.

The best part is that they were just nominated for a Grammy for Best NEW Artist!

I saw Modest Mouse on 'Austin City Limits', and I couldn't believe that they were pretty horible musicians....

I just sat there thinking 'I thought you had to be good to be on Austin City Limits'..... ;\)

What worries me the most is that, going on with this revival cycle, the next coming thing is....rap!!!! Coming back without even quitting for a while....

There are also bands like The Faint. Not quite along the lines of The Killers, but definite early '80s New Wave influences there.

Some of this kind of music (Depeche/Cure/Bauhaus/etc influenced) has been around all along though - check out http://www.side-line.com.

30% Depeche Mode - with no keyboards? How about 90% Bauhaus and a singer that sounds like Phil Oakey from the Human League? IMO, they really should get some synths in the lineup (black ones, of course).
