I have been researching the microphone used on Billie Jean and have come across this information.

From the Shure site.
http://www.shure.com/otws/tech/sm57.asp

This states that it was an SM57.

However, there are numerous quotes by Harvey Gerst, all of which seem to have originated at homerecording.com, in which he states that it was the SM7 or SM7B.

Inquiring minds want to know. I looked all through your book and could not find this tidbit mentioned. Care to seperate the facts from myth?

It was the SM-7.
I worked on "BAD" with Bruce and I bought one too.
You won't ever regret getting one, their not only great for vocals, but GTR amps, high hats, Bass Drums, saxaphones. They will take a pretty high spl. I use mine almost daily.

good luck,

Russ

The mental picture of an SM7 on a pair of hats is mildly amusing.

(forceman: was that really necessary? \:\( )

Hey Middle Man,

The SM-7 is also the same mic used by:
Howard Stern
Billy Idol
MJ
The Black Crows & just about everything produced by Don Was

These are the ones that come to mind ... I'm shure they're are plenty more.

Let's point out to the novices and other non-radio folks that the SM-7, along with the EV RE20, is one of the great voice over mics. I'd never heard of them used for singing vocals much, other than Michael on Thriller.

I've seen SM-7's used on quite a few vocal tracks over the years... other than just VO work. A lot of rockers like them. Personally, I prefer the RE20, but YMMV. They definitely don't suck IMO.

Miles Davis' trumpet was often recorded with SM-7.

I can see that. I just used a Sennheiser MD421 at 90 degrees off axis (playing into the end) for Rod McGaha's horn on a live gig and it was smooooooooth. ;\) I would guess the SM7 would perform similarly, though it's been years since I've used one, personally.

It helps that Rod's tone is great to begin with.

Dasss right, Tinder! And he's a gentleman, too.

Actually, it's funny you mention his tone because Rod was more than happy to play into an SM57, which I could easily have used. Given the extra 421 and what I saw and heard when Rod pulled out his horn, I just had to try something better from the limited mic locker the sound company provided. His tone lived up to everything I expected or could have desired.

(It didn't hurt to have Chester Thompson on drums and Jerry Navarro on bass. Kelly Cox was the key player. She was fantastic, too, but I'd neither heard of nor worked with her prior to the gig.

Oh, and it was outdoors in a nice pavillion, too.
