I can't find anywhere to put this topic, so i just put it here. If anyone knows the answer to the following, please reply. I have an original fairchild 670 in perfect working condition. I bought out an old mastering studio. Does anyone know where I can sell this equiptment?...and about how much should I expect to get for it? Thank you, Travis

It weighs a lot, no?
Seriously, you just found cash in the attic.
Try Vintage King first. LINK
Also you could post on gearslutz either in the "high end" forum or the classified sections.
Or you could hold onto it and make beautiful music.

$32,000 if it is in top notch condition
$28,000 if it is not.

Yup. Right around $30,000. I've seen them go as low as $20K, though.
If you're selling it to a re-seller (dealer), you'll probably get less than by selling it privately, but you could probably unload it more quickly to a dealer. eBay might not be a bad solution, as Boosh suggested.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but ask me if I care.
Why the hell are those things so damned expensive? I can buy a fully loaded Subaru Outback for the price of that obnoxiously heavy gain control device. Is it because the Beatles recorded through it or something?
ebay it, or Craigslist it....or sell it at a used car lot.

Pardon my asking, but is this the whole story?

If someone will pay you good money, sell it - it's impossible to find 8 matched 6386s anymore and those thinigs eat them about every 6 months as they are used to drive the output tranny...

Well, we bought out the mastering studio to master, however after blowing the ampex amplifiers, we had the entire system re-engineered in california. We no longer use the fairchild, but know it is worth a lot of money...it even has all 8 matching 6386s. Thank you all for your help, Travis

They do have a unique sound, and they are cool and rare (thus the hefty price), but I wouldn't own one unless I was filthy rich. Too big, too much maintenance hassle, and it's the same thing with the tubes that prevents me from owning an original U47... I'm not going to drop $7K on a mic that uses a rare / hard to find $1,500 tube... and it's worse for the 670's, because you need eight matched tubes. No thanks. With the money a 670 would bring, I could buy several Distressors, a few nice mics, etc. etc.
Again, unless you're extremely wealthy, and have very high client demand for it that would justify having it around, I'd sell it.

I found this on Mercenary's website:
The world leader in cost and performance is the exalted Fairchild 670. Testing for this 2-channel, 70-pound mutha was performed in Les Paul's living room. Serial numbers 1-6 were production prototypes and sound slightly better than the subsequent production models. Those subsequent production models (fetching more than $20,000 these days) must be heard to be believed! It's like adding the in-your-face fatness you have always craved with the thickest, most controlled bottom you have ever experienced, and with a high end that just shimmers and dances to your delight. When I don't have one around, I go to Georgetown Masters in Nashville to have Denny Purcell master my record. Besides being one of the finest mastering engineers on the planet, he has his "Fairchildren" (a pair of 660s, the mono version of the 670) that always make my recordings sound like I almost have a clue.
It seems that many of the West Coast engineers prefer Attack/Release constant #4. I prefer #2 and #3, faster release times than preset 4. According to the manual, numbers 5 and 6 are user presets, but you have to go inside with a schematic and soldering iron to change these. (By the way, #1 doesn't suck, it's just really fast).
The 670 was originally built for disc cutting and has Lateral/Vertical controls to limit the movements of disc cutter heads. I've found that on stereo percussion tracks (congas and the like) you can use this setting as an almost psychoacoustic device. It seems to push the congas out about a foot to either side of the speakers. Way cool effect.

Not anymore he doesn't... RIP Denny.
IOW, it's a older article. It doesn't make it any less valid, but the prices may be out of date a bit.
And not to disagree with my buddy Fletcher, but I do like Time Constant #4... but 3 and 2 are also useful... it depends on the material. 1 is just too quick for most purposes IMO.

I could post a picture, but it will just look like a brand new fairchild. Thanks for the information. If anyone is interested in buying one, then email me at bigt_45@yahoo.com and ask for pictures. Thank you, Travis
